What are your experiences with 40 pound draw bows?

My daughter shot a buck in the shoulder with her compound bow that has a forty pound draw on it.  The arrow went in approximately 3 inches and produced no blood.  Do you think if it was a fifty pound bow the arrow would have penetrated better or was this just a misplaced shot by a few inches?  I am guessing the broadhead hit bone and stopped. 

Do any on you shoot low pound bows like this, if so what are your experiences?

Been there done that.  As long as you have good sharp broadheads, it was just placement.  She put it in bone.
