7mm Barnes Bullets
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:22:06 AM »
Has anyone used these, and have experience with terminal ballistics in any 7mm application?  How well do they work?

Which ones?  There are many .284" Barnes bullets.

Let's keep this to the TSX, MRX, and Banded Solid lines.

I have shot several deer, antelope and a couple elk with the triple shock 150 and 160s out of my 7mag,best performance and weight retention I have ever seen, blows away the Nosler partitions.99-100% weight retention on the few I have recovered, watch you back field, their penetration is awesome.

Had a friend shoot a raghorn 4 point bull elk straight on in the chest with an original 140gr X bullet at fairly close range (30 to 40 yards).  It was launched from a 7-08 at approx 2,800 fps muzzle velocity.  He recovered the bullet back by the kidneys.  The next year, he took a black bear in Alaska with the same load -- here's his description of the bullets perfomance.

I took a very nice
blackie around 300 lbs at just under 300 yds with the same load.  Took
him quartering away through the near shoulder, broke that, took out 1
lung, then continued on up the neck, turned "in" at the skull, and
actually exited the offside ear.  Pretty impressive I thought for a
nominal 2800 fps load.  It's quite accurate in my Ruger OM M-77, but I'd
probably use the Triple shock now for some less fouling.  Those old X's
were rough on copper deposits!

These are quite helpful.  Please keep them coming in.  I am thinking that these will do the job nicely where I want to hunt at.

I've had great success both hunting and on the range with 140 grain TSX in my 7WSM. I was surprised to be honest, and only bought them because I was getting frustrated that nothing else would work.  Very terminal!  Somewhere in my pile of junk I have target with two five shot groups that can be covered with a penny using these slugs.  ;D

SuperstitionCoues:

I haven't used them yet, but am switching to do all my rifle hunting with the TSX bullets. I've read and heard enough glowing reports that I'm convinced of their excellence.

I've used the original Barnes X bullets for years on deer in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas in a Ruger .280. I like them as they seem to produce minimal meat damage and kill well.

I finally ran out of the old X bullets last year and decided to use the Sierra 160 grain Game Kings since they are very accurate (and cheaper). On opening day I killed a nice eight point and was reminded on how little meat damage the Barnes bullets caused. I now have a fresh batch of the new 160 grain TSX bullets loaded and ready to go for this year's season.

I must say that the new TSX bullets shoot a tighter group out of my .280 than the original X bullets did and shoot as well as the Sierras. If the TSX performs as well as the old X did, they will be worth the extra cost for me.

Shot a muley doe with a 160 gr TSX this AM at 340 yards the bullet blew the heart in half and left a nickel size exit wound as  it broke and exited the off shoulder, she nosed in about 15 yards later and never twitched,IMO perfect results, cant wait to use it again...maybe tomorow!

I just shot a 4X5 Bull Elk with a 160 Grain MRX and it absolutely anchored him....it was a quartering shot passing all the way through.  My TSX's work really well, also...I don't find any reall differences between the TSXs and the MRXs unless it passes 300 yards.  The MRXs are kinda hard to find, but the TSXs are a diem a dozen.  The TSX of the same weight is a lot longer than the MRX.  I have also used the TSX in my .220 Swift and it holds up at 4k fps.
