6MM
« on: October 28, 2007, 12:14:34 PM »
I am looking for a single shot 6MM.   I have been considering the Ultra rifle in 243.  Let me run these plans by you guys.  I purchase the 243 ultra, rent a reamer, do a little work on my end and viola.  In a round about way.
Looking at the specs of the two, the 243 there is a slight taper in the side walls.  I can clean that up with the reamer.  The rim dimensions being similar, I would be able to utilize the extractor supplied with the 243.  Obviously the oal length on the 6MM is greater than the 243.  Without the specs in front of me I am remembering that it was roughly 3/8 of an inch longer.  As for the pressures I am comparing the 243 barrel to be the same used for the 25.06.  Then I would be within reason on the pressures, even shooting the light weights.
Any additional information on your end would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That topic had been discussed at length more than once before, you'd have to go to 6mmAI to clean up a 243 chamber.

1st let me say - what ever trips your trigger. ;D The 6mm Remington is great cartridge, it is based on the 7mm Mauser. The 243 is based on the 308. The 6mm Remington is probably a better cartridge than a 243. There is little to gain as far a velocity is concerned, some, but little. The 243 is much more popular than the 6mm Remington so it easier to get factory ammo for. But then there is the cool factor - to have what not very many others have. if you are doing for that reason, then go for it. If you are doing it for performance, forget it, not enough difference to worry about. The 6mm AI will step you up a little bit more, but again not a whole lot. Hardly worth the expense of the re chamber + special class dies as far as performance is concerned. But there is that cool factor. Just my 2 cents - good luck to you.
