Scent shelf life???
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:27:50 PM »
How old do you figure your deer scents can be and still be effective?  I always date my bottles and some of them go back to 03 & 04.  I store them with all my other hunting gear in air tight bags.  I wonder if I'm just a cheapskate or if I should spring for new stuff each year.???

I really dont think deer piss is in the same catagory as fine wine, with that said I usually get some new Tinks every year, however you might try opening a bottle and see if it still smells like it will work.   JIM

FWIW:  I just read the label on my new bottle of Wildlife Research #1 select estrus and there is an expiration date of 01/09.  I guess they want you to buy a new bottle after second year.  After returning from Wallyworld & reading the label on Wildlife Research Select Golden Estrus, it sounds like this product is the freshest & priced to sell for 07 season at double the price of #1 Select estrus.  It states it is still effective for 08 season and instructs retailer to send all unsold scent back to WRC.  I assume then it is repackaged for the following year & sold for 1/2 price as Select Estrus (The stuff I all ready  bought).  If all this is true it means the expensive  fresh scent is good for 3 years and the year old stuff is good for 2 years.

I rarely use it, but I have know people that used the "natural" stuff for several years.  Long before someone came out with a "Recovery Kit" for that a buck's urine a friend had been doing it for many years..  Often he would recover urine this year and not use it until next year.  The urine was stored in a half gallon jug, he may have some left from the previous year and put the newly recovers urine in the same jug with it.  He always had several scrapes, and drips in the area and they seemed to work.  I remember a drag he gave me that had a wound up piece of burlap attached to a 4 foot piece of parachute line that was stored in a fruit jar filled with his recovered mixture.  I tied it to the rear bumper of my pickup and drove to stand one morning, and I will swear, I watched at least eight-ten bucks pickup the trail and walk within range of the stand, a couple of them came up to 5-6 feet from the truck sniffing for the scent.

Commerical urine likely has additives that may affect the shelve life, and the natural urine may also "expire", but from my experience it didn't seem to hurt it.
