.35 Whelen for Plains Game

Is a .35 Whelen good for non-dangerous plains game?  What if any dangerous game is it good for?

The 35 Whelen would be good for all nondangerous plains game.  In most places, shots won't be over 200 yards.

The 35 Whelen would not be legal for elephant, rhino and cape buffalo.  I don't think it's legal for lion anywhere and I'd want to use something bigger anyway.  It would be fine for leopard but you would have to check on the legalities of using it since some areas may require a bigger cartridge.

Functionally one of hte best for PG

From a practical standpoint it is only good if you're willing to use another gun if your ammo does not show with the luggage and gun. A rare event to be sure but you will not find this ammo or the ammo from any of the less common cartridges. I've had lots of hunters with the 338/06 and the 35 Whelen. None have ever had an ammo problem. Those with ammo problems upon arrival have always been with common cartridges and we could always find it, or had it on hand.

I use a 35 Whelen during a hunt in Namibia and was very pleased with its performance.  It is easily capable of all North American game, plus African game as well.

Here is a post that I started in this forum awhile back.  Included is also a response from JJHACK.
