Who uses Lube on their Sabots?
« on: November 03, 2007, 05:16:50 PM »
I was shooting the other day,and another shooter at the range was shooting his ML. I noticed he would rub a little lube on the sabot before loading. I've allways heard "not to put anything on the sabot, and to run it dry. After talking to him we went down range to get the targets, and I have to say,he shot one heck of a group,1-1/2 inches. Now I'm thinking of trying this. Maybe a little bore butter? Ron

I have used bore butter in my Encore on the sabot for many years. My accuracy is great also.

I bore butter every sabot. Great accuracy, easier to load, less fouling. It does tend to to harden in cold weather, though. That makes it tough to get out of speed-loaders, or even out of the tube if you don't keep it warm, or next to your body.

A while back I bought a couple of packs of Harvester Crush Rib sabots and noticed that the back of the label card said "TO CHECK RIFLE FOR ACCURACY, CLEAN AND LUBE BARREL BETWEEN SHOTS".   So, I took my best load, a 300 grain Speer Gold Dot in a Harvester short sabot over 100 grains T-7 FFG and shot some groups by fully cleaning the barrel between shots, loading the bullet, then wiping the barrel on top of the load with a patch lightly dampened with Rem-Oil.  Got the best 5-shot groups I've ever gotten.  Now its my standard procedure.  The bonus is that I'm sighted in for clean barrel hunting and can leave the load in the barrel forever without worry about rust.

Your loading the bullet, then wiping down the bore "ahead" of the loaded bullet, with Rem Oil?

Yep!  That's what I'm doing.  I clean the barrel completely between shots with two patches of Windex with Vinegar and two dry patches, then load, then oil.  I didn't want to follow the Harvester suggestion of "lube barrel between shots" because I didn't want the powder charge in contact with the oiled barrel.

Makes sense! I wonder if you lubed (lightly) the bore with Bore Butter before loading,if it would contaminate the powder?

I'm not a bore butter fan.  My brother-in-law loves the stuff.  Go figure.  It's all in your head, ya' know!
