I hate casting lead!
« on: June 24, 2003, 12:22:44 AM »
Spent a large portion of a good Sunday afternoon casting (30) 2lb. lead balls. In short, what a major pain in the ass. I even burnt myself on my mould to add insult to injury.

There's gotta' be a better way to provide ammo for my toys. Cooking up all that lead with the smoke, fumes and smells scares me because if the potential health implications. Lead splatters and the possibilities of explosion due to moisture/water make this activity downright nasty.

Thank God, I only do this once or twice a year.

In a previous post, someone  mentioned about using concrete moulds. I'd like to investigate this a little further. What types of mould material would be suitable for concrete? I don't particularly want to experiment by using my aluminum moulds if it'll ruin them. However, if aluminum is fine, I'll give it a try.

Thanks.

I f you were doing that casting in the fresh air I wouldn't worry about it.  If you were in a room with little or no air circulation, that's not good.

What diameter are those leadballs?  I need a ball mould that drops 2.5 inch ball.

I was in a very well ventillated area (inside) and I also did some casting outside as well.

I bought my mould from these guys http://www.tyeetackle.com/weightmolds.html . I see they have a 2.5" mold but it is "finned". I don't believe that would be suitable for our purposes.

Well I suppose we could always paper patch the 2 3/8 diameter moulds. Two wraps of paper .675 thick....
