Nice shooting
now I have always thought that the Savage 99 was a slightly strange looking rifle and never have shot one. Come to think of it I think I have only ever handled one once. Might have to try to rectify that!
Now a strange thing I have noticed is that I was reading "The Hunting Rifle" by Townsend Wheelan and he mentions the rifles that he considered accurate and high quality that have been made and were since 1898 still in production at that time. yet Savage even as a company is not mentioned. He repeatedly mentions Winchester and Remington. Reading it it becomes clear his favorite of the two was Winchester. What I wonder and don't understand was why even when mentioning lever actions did Wheelan leave out the Savage after all it's, or I have heard it's, much better accuracy wise than say the Winchester 94 and of course handles cartridges more suited to hunting deer later one of course being available in .308 win.
I know that Wheelan was responsible for the better styled and proportioned stocks on the Winchester 71 which I believe they listed as the NRA stock. This prejudicece against Savage seems out of place somehow! anyone know why this was?
Edit:- Read a little further and he does finally mention the Savage 99 and rates it about the same as the Win 94?
now surely the Savage 99 shoots better than the normal Winchester 94.
