Hi point 45ACP
« on: September 10, 2007, 03:06:22 AM »
??? I just picked up a package deal for the High Point 45 with laser for $ 200.00. Has anyone used ine of these pistols and if so how did it function and with what ammo? I have heard they are tough as nails and don't seem to jam much. Thanks, Jess

Not trying to be negative, but High Points are an absolute piece of junk. They break firing pins on a regular basis and are not very reliable. Think about it: 45 ACP plus laser for $200.00 bucks. You get what you pay for!!!

??? I understand your comments about this gun but everyone I know who has one love em. I put 150 rounds throgh mine on Saturday 230FMJ and 185grJHP with zero jams and all with very good groups. my groups ran around 3 inches for 7 9 shot groups at 15 yards. It is is minute of fool who tries to break into my house. I own a Kimber Ultra carry and love it. Don't knock the gun if you haven't tried one forthe money u pull the trugger it goes bang and cycles another and another and goes bang everytime I pull the trigger. Sounds like a good buy to me.  Jess  ;D

Hopefully it will still do that after 1000 rounds. I stand by my comments, as I've seen to many come in the gun shop with broken firing pins. I have shot one before and the trigger pull had to be 12 lbs. If you have a Kimber you would be much better off using it for home defense than the Hi-Point. They are cheap made guns, which is why they only cost $200.00 with the laser!!! Your Kimber is a much higher quality pistol.

John you point is well taken my Kimber cost 5 times as much. I figured for $ 200 bucks I'd use it for knock around gun and not drag my Kimber thru the mud. So far so good. It could be an anchor for my Jon boat. So far any way it worked and I enjoyed blowing u some ammo.    ;D ;D   Jess

HMM.. I'll give ya $175.00 for the laser  ;D Sorry ::) I've fired a hi-point in .45 but I just couldn't get used to it after shooting 1911's I seem to remember it being very top heavy...but it didn't have any malfunctions after 150 rnds. - kevin

Personally, I love the High Points for what they are intended.

They are cheap, bulky, heavy, and hard to disassemble for cleaning.  They are way to big and ugly to carry, and would wear a guy out on the gun range.  Still they are great to stash around the house for personal protection.  Mine, have all been perfectly reliable, and from what I have heard, those that do have problems, get taken care of by the manufacturer.

But what they ain't is a 1911. and have no place on a 1911 forum, if you ask me.

You really have to explain to me how that isn't negative.

I have a HP 45 and like it.  It's kinda like that girl you want to hang around with, but never really want to parade in public.  It is ugly, top heavy, akward feeling in the hand, and big.... but mine shoots fine.  I would probably like it MORE if HP would make a carbine in 45.

Like some of the other guys say, over a 1000 rounds...and not a single problem yet.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Well it might have been a tad bit negative, but then again we're talking about a High Point. Like I said you get what you pay for. Also, I agree that this should not be on the 1911 forum, possibly the cheap gun forum. (Hi-Point, RG, Llama, Jennings, etc.) ;D

There are two camps: those who only use good guns, and those who will use relatively poor guns for some purposes. Both camps seem to have fun with what they use.

I was discussing this topic with my gunsmith buddy and he said if you had to buy a Hi-Point you needed to buy two of them, one to crap on and the other one to cover it up with. ;D

There's a statement I agree with, but for a much different, down to earth reason.
They are affordable.  At their cost, you can afford to stash them all over your house, car, whatever.  Just remember to be safe, and keep them out of the hands of kids, and the BG.  I have fired a minimum of 500 failure free rounds from all of my High Points, before putting them into service.  I doubt these things would last anywhere near as long as a good 1911, but then you wouldn't ask as much from it.  To restate what I have already said, there is a place for these things,  and if you understand their limitations, they are a really good value in my book.

It's interesting to read the different criteria around what we value in our guns. For me, 500 rounds is about how long it takes me to get used to a new handgun. 1,000 is just a month or so after that.  I wonder if the message in this thread is that the high points are not durable enough for guys like me who expect to do a lot of shooting. Is that where the negative opinions were formed?

I know the lore of handguns often categorizes them by number of rounds they can be expected to last. For example, "It was never intended for that kind of service, it's a 2000 round gun", meaning that the expected service life is 2000 rounds and after 2000 rounds you could expect the gun to fail.

How many rounds is the High Point?

I hadn't seen these guns, so just looked them up. How do they get it to work as a blowback gun for 45acp? I thought they'd need some kind of locking mechanism. Is it that they are using a very heavy slide?

Questor, the slide by itself must weigh about 3 lbs. These things are so top heavy it's unbelievable. That's why they make such good trotline weights ;D

Interesting! Well, it's nice to learn something new every day. I guess that's how they can make them so cheaply.

Yup!  At least in my opinion.

If you want to do a lot of shooting, use your Kimber, Colt, or Springfield Armory.   That is what  I do.

After my High Points get christened, they stay at home on guard duty.

How many of you have guns that have lifetime warranties to the bazillionth owner? I do in my hi point.

How many of you have actually shot a hi point? I have and it works flawlessly.

Hopefully the admins wont mind but if you have questions regarding your hi point visit http://hipointfirearmsforums.com/Forum/index.php

The old site crashed was hosted on free forums and crashed so they are starting over. After about 4 days there are over 275 users who do not think they are junk.

Pills:

I'm with you. I'm rather enthusiastic about the Hi-Point because it allows someone who just wants to try a 45 and doesn't have a large budget to use it. I looked it up and found that they weigh the same as a 1911, but by accounts from this board are relatively top heavy.

My brother just picked up a like new XD45 for $400.00 (new ones only run $535.00). That's a heck of a deal for 13+1 in 45 ACP. I would much rather spend the extra $200 and have something worth owning than waste $200 on a Hi-Point. If you look around you can find a good deal on a used auto pistol (XD's, Glock, S&W, etc.) that will last you a lifetime. In the meantime have fun shooting whatever you own. :)

That's been my approach, but some guys find $400 too much. Particularly young people or people with lots of kids. I'm glad we have the option of getting the lower cost guns if we need them.

::) Tell you what I love all the opinions and frankly it gets real old how people bash another persons choice's. If u don't like the Hi Point spend your money on a plastic cap gun. It's wasn't your nickle was it. i have put 550 rounds through my 45 and have had zero misfeeds. My 2 1911's are 1930's versions and love them. My Kimber Ultra Carry is best built gun I own, but the Hi point is tool and i know it's limitations. I have it for home defense and to carry when i am in the field to diswade critters with teeth that bite and for that purpose it does the job. Jess

The only negative I've heard about the HiPoints (other than the ergonomics) is that if you dry fire them you'll break a firing pin by the second or third pull. There was an article a while back in one of the gun magazines that gave them a great review. For the money, they and the KelTecs are probably the best thing going. Most of the folks that knock HiPoints or Keltecs have never seen or used one. They prefer to rely on the word of their "expert" friends.

friend of mine had a highpoint rifle in 9mm and said it was accurate and reliable.
