H&R Handi 45/70 and Burris FFII Ballistic Plex
« on: November 27, 2007, 07:42:39 AM »
Has anyone sighted in a Handi 45/70 with Hornady or Remington 300 grains with a Burris FFII?  If I sight it in dead on at 100 Yards, how will the ballistic plex work?

Welcome! The only way to know what is what is to shoot it at known ranges to find out. Mac has used the Nikon Omega BDC scope on his 45-70 Optima Elite with good results, and I just put one on a 45-70 Handi to check out, but it hasn't been to the range yet.

USM10 - I just purchased software from Arthur Brown called 1st Hit. It allows you to crono. your load then input the info (ie. speed, cal., coefficient, alt., temp., and sight height) and it will tell you the exact range for that load on the given reticle. I covers mil-dot and BDC reticles of all types. You can then print it out and attach it to your rifle and have dope on hand that is geometrically precise. Go to www.eabco.com and look for 1st Hit Ballistic Reticle Software it will explain it better than I can. I think this is a great tool that you can use to adapt the Ballistic Reticle to all calibers. I've got 2 Burris B-plex scopes and I use the Point Blank ballistics software. It works quite well.
300 gr hornady SP @ 1900 fps
zero at 100 the extra crosshairs would be approximately 140yds - 200yds - 260yds - 305yds

shooting at the range is the only true test.

While you're at the range using the chronograph to determing your actual velocity you shoot at those ranges and see how close it is, that's the ONLY way to know if it's accurate, too many variables with different loads, loading techniques and guns to rely soley on the software. ;)
