How to get the front sight off
« on: June 19, 2003, 06:47:08 AM »
I have a 10inch Hornet barrel that has the front sight permintely attached.  I would like to get it off so I can attach my scope.  It is too high and the bell of the scope needs to go right where the front sight is.  I know there is probably not an easy way to get it off but it has to come off and I would like to get it off without devaluing the barrel too much.

Any Suggestions?

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

don't really know much, but i think some older barrels had front sights soldered on. i would assume some sort of heat would work to get it off. better be careful though, too much heat would be bad for the finish maybe. :D

And when you do get it off, I believe you're going to have a blob of unblued, silver-soldered metal where the sight was.  This is NOT going to be a pretty barrel if you do this, unless you now want to have it polished and reblued.  I'd back the scope up an inch if possible and leave the sight alone.

I'll give you guys a little more info about what I am trying to accomplish.  I use this frame to shoot NRA silhouettes.  I use a 10" 22 match barrel for the small bore compitition.  It wears a 6-20X40 Bushnell scope.    I use the Hornet for the Hunter Bore compitition.  It currently has a Tasco World Class 3-9X40 scope, which is working but I would like to put the same type scope that is on my 22 barrel on my hornet barrel so I will be essentially shooting the same gun in both events.

I don't want to go to alot of expense and I don't want to make the barrel look like crap either.  I have a good gunsmith so maybe I'll let him look at it and see what happens.

Thanks
