Ruger Carbine

Yup i got mine out and sighted it in. Dead on at 25 yds. with its old universal 4x scope. Its one of the first ones made back in the 60's. Rifle not the scope!  I use 240gr. Win. JSP in it. Unless i get out of my tree stand my shots are 40 yds. max and thats only in spot! I will have to get a slipon recoil pad, as my old shoulder didn't cotton to the thumping it received while sighting in.

I have an old Ruger Carbine as well. They are nice little guns. Interesting about the recoil. They are pretty light. I was looking at the Double Tap 240 Gold Dot load the other day and figured it would be a good one in the Ruger. I pretty much have stuck with the 240 JSP's in mine Remington or Winchester.

  Just remember they can be sensitive to OAL of the cartridge.  Won't usually feed any that are on the long side to reliably.

If you want to try a 300 grain bullet I have never had feeding problems with the XTP. The 270 grain Speer Gold Dot runs pretty good too. Even so I figure the gun was designed for the 240 JSP or JHP so I stick with them. Norma at one time loaded a special carbine load. It was a steel jacketed 240 grain SP.

Using different bullet weights in Ruger carbine

Several years ago, I experimented with light weight 44 cal bullets in my Ruger carbine. My findings were interesting. I was interested in increasing velocity by using 180 to 200 gr bullets. These lighter bullets gave very poor accuracy with 100yd groups around 4 to 5 inches. Heavier bullets, 240, 250, 270, and 300 all gave 1 to 2 inch groups. The experiment ended and I routinely use 240 or 270 gr bullets over H110 or Wiin296. I never had problems with the 300gr as long as they are seated to the recommended length.

Years ago I ran some 180 grain Super Vel's thru my 44 Carbine. That was a hot load.
