270win Bullets for Black Bear
« on: September 15, 2007, 04:57:10 AM »
Any recommendations for bullets on black bear (med size) for the 270? Avg shot distances will be 150 to 200 yards.

Hi!

I've used 150NPs with great success....just for fun I used a 160gr NP on a 6' blackie.  The power and shock value was awesome.  The hide had the .270 hole and a larger exit, but on skinning, you could put your fist into the wound channels. I'd use it again on any big animal.

Since it ain't long range shootin', I'd get the heaviest round nose bullet I could find. Speer used to make a 170 grainer, I don't know if they still do.  8)

Having been there with a bear in thick tan oak and shooting 130 grain Bronze Points all I can say is use a 150 grain bullet or one of the heavy ones suggest.  I was using the wrong bullet for the target.  Getting a bear out of a steep drainage is not fun.  There are better bullets around then there was 45 years ago.

140 Accubond or 150 N. Partition

After reading up on the Fusion, I would add the 150 gr to this list.
