+1 for shooting it.

The best thing to do with a functional firearm is to shoot it and enjoy  ;)

Unless it was a firearm of extreme historical significance I shoot the heck out of it.  Don't abuse it, but shoot it and enjoy it.

a 70 series national  match is a wonderful gun and it would be a total shame to leave it sit in a box. to me those old blued ones were about the nicest 45s ever made. They not only shoot beautifuly but will turn my head like a group of high school chearleaders!!

The only guns I wouldn't shoot are guns that are of historic significance that belong in a museum, or guns that are unsafe to shoot. Otherwise why own it?

But I derange myself because I'm a shooter and not a collector. I have a friend who owns guns for the sake of owning them and admiring them. I respect that. If you're inclined as he is to care for your possessions as he does, then have at it! It's a big country and you've got to go with what gives you enjoyment.

I agonized over the same question (but not for long!).  I bought a '1 of 500' engraved Colt a while back and thought maybe I shouldn't shoot it.  I had been watching it at the dealers for some time and finally asked to see it.  When I tried the trigger, I was sold.  Had I not been a shooter, the trigger pull would not have mattered to me.  She has about 1500 rounds through it so far.  I do try to be careful of the finish when I am carrying it, but I shoot it a lot.  If the finish gets heavily worn at some point, I may consider having it hard chromed.  44 Man

44man:

I wouldn't worry too much about wear. I use my bullseye guns a lot. The routine is to take the gun out of the case, shoot, put it back in the case, clean the gun, then put it back in its case. So there's no field wear except wear related to shooting. There are two wear points on the bluing:
1) On the trigger guard where I put my finger just prior to putting the finger on the trigger.
2) On the back strap. I.e., the main spring housing and grip safety.

The wear has the quality of honest use and is actually handsome as it shows careful ownership that and usage.

Actually,I have another identical Series 70 Gold Cup that I do shoot. This gun came along at a bargain. One shooter is enough.May trade it off or also may keep it for posterity. The only reason the subject came up was a friend of mine ask why I don't shoot it and compare it with the one I do shoot.I realley see no need for that as both are unmodified except a grip change.

My concern was less about shooting wear than holster wear on the finish.  The bluing is fairly easy to take care of but I was thinking that if the gold inlay showed wear at some point, I might just hard chrome the whole gun as I don't think the gold could be re-done.  44 Man
