.41 Magnum Contender Load--Deer Hunting--50 yards or closer
« on: November 06, 2007, 05:45:43 AM »
I'd appreciate any suggestions on hunting loads for my Contender with a 10" non-ported bull barrel.

I'm hunting w/open sights so I will sight the gun in for 50 yards.

I'd prefer to use jacketed bullets.

Thanks!

I haven't shot any deer and only one small caribou with Corbon 265 gr hard cast.  That may have been too much of a good thing for the small animal - about 100 lbs and I got full penetration.  I'd use a top load of H110 and the 210 Hornady XTP - seems like it gets a lot of good press on here. Or H110 with the Speer 220.  I've been loading some 250 jackted bullets I get from a guy in Oregon (see Gray Beards' New Produts forum).  But I haven't shot enough of them to have a good load.  Just loaded some  round 2 nights ago. Good bullets but again mighty heavy for smaller animals.  I'm loading them for my Marlin Rifle and Redhawk. Good luck and I hope you post a picture of success.

On white tail i have had good luck with the Speer 170 grain JHPs over a near max load of H110 , this is out of a 8" S&W 657 .

Thank you for the suggestions!  I'm looking forward to trying several
loads.

I will be sure to post a photo if I'm lucky enough to shoot a nice one.

better late than never maybe-- I some chrono'd loads from a 14" 41-- if you are interested-- let me PM me-- the 170 work well on normal whitetails --whatever that is
