I just purchased a kimber 22 hunter it is one sweet rifle extremely accurate and feels like a full size rifle, but once you feel the trigger it's love.

Without a doubt, my 1946-vintage Winchester Model 75 Sporting Rifle is my favorite rimfire rifle. To my eye, there is nothing manufactured today that compares to it, all things considered. All blued steel and walnut, no plastic or other "space age" components....just the way a rifle was intended to be. l

Hey ya'll,

My favorite .22 rimfire rifle is the Winchester 1885 low wall, recent manufacture.  It has 24" half octagon half round heavy barrel, straight grip, crescent butt plate, schnable fore end with ebony insert, adjustable trigger.  I baught is used for $600, but you cannot tell it had been used.  It came with Leupold mounts and and rings.  I took them off and installed a Marbles tang sight and a Lyman 17-A globe front sight with changeable inserts.  Removed the rear barrel sight and put a Marbles slot filler in its place.

This is an accurate and fun rifle to shoot silhouette with.  I have also shot some schuetzen matches with it.  It does like high dollar match ammo the best but does pretty darn good with discontinued winchester silhouette 42 grain ammo when I can find it.

Sincerely,
Dave (Bubba) Thornblom

Kimber Hunter is tops for me. Had a Charles Daly import that shot great, maybe better than the Kimber. Had a horrible checkering pattern and bad trigger. To get the trigger respectable I had troubles with the safety working properly. Nice high gloss finish to the metal. After that I had a nice Browning .22 a-bolt. Beautiful gun but not a great shooter.

I shoot a Mossberg 46B.  An old gun but is very accurate.  I just bought the Kimber Hunter.  I just have to set it up with bases and rings and a scope.

I have a Mohawk Brown, manufactured around 1962, mint condition, a Black Diamond, made about 78', and a CBC Black Beauty that looks like it was made yesterday.  I plan on picking up a Apache Black one day just to complete the collection, but personally I never really cared for this model, too shiny to hunt with. I don't plan on trying to get a Seneca Green, they are just too expensive.
I love these guns though, even the CBC. They are an absolute blast to shoot, they have the fastest cycling action of any auto made.
Just wished I would have got hooked on them earlier.

i still think that Remington might do well if they were to put the 597s on the shelf, dust off the old '66 tooling and re-introduce that line ! Of course, the collectors would like to see them made slightly differently colors and maybe a Monte Carlo on some..just to preserve the value of the ones they have..

I wish they would. I just don't think they will.

Anything would be an improvement over the 597.  I've never seen any other model that jammed consistantly out of the box like the 597.  I've never seen one that didn't jam unless it had multiple aftermarket parts.  There is no telling how many customers they are losing by producing such junk.  They've lost me.  Only time will tell how long they can peddle such a poor rifle.

I bought a new 597M several years ago, and to this day it had not jammed or had even one problem...  It's reliable and accutate, and it's been an excelent pest gun here on the farm...

If you go read on the rimfire forums, you will see the Rem has sorted out the 597's, as it was mostly a problems with the magazines...  My 597 has worked perfectly from day one...

I agree. 3rd best on the market. The first the T/C R55, Marlin Model 60, Rem 597 and then the 10/22 which I have had no luck with. Just my 2 cents.

The model I had and the models I've observed at my smith are the newer versions with the metal mags. Mine was bought around 2005-2006, I think.  I'm getting older and can't remember.  The mag was a problem for the 597 but not the only one.  The ejectors are not ground at the correct angle as a result of poor machine work. The problem was blamed on the mags then the guide rods.  The problem is with the ejector.  If you have a good one, consider yourself lucky.  Call any Remington repair center and ask them what they think of the 597.  Most of them will not work on them.  The Walmart near me that continues to sell guns even quit carrying them, too many problems and as they offer no returns, well you can imagine the grief they got from customers.

How do you find out what year your 66 was made in? I have been trying to figure it out on mine but when I wrote down the serial number for insurance purposes i didn't see a letter year code preceding it.

I found the info on nylonrifles.com site for mine, but I don't know if that will help on yours without a prefix letter. The guy who runs that site is very knowledgeable on the 66 but the forum has been dead for a while now. In fact, you would probably get a quicker answer at rimfirecentral.com.
Hope this helps.
