taurus pt22
« on: November 28, 2007, 02:51:24 AM »
i just picked up a brand new taurus pt22 with rosewood grips. after dissassembling it and giving it a good cleaning and inspection i took it out and fired off a few rounds .. i have a problem, it wont eject the spent shells all of the time. about every other shot i get a stove pipe malfunction. further if i manually function the slide it will pick up a round, feed it into the chamber, but it wont extract the round to feed the next one coming in..
is this piece broken ? any help ?

It's just a Taurus they seem prone to all sorts of poor quality issues these days and the only thing worst than their quality seems to be their customer service. Sad really as once I was about the strongest supporter of their guns on the internet but when quality hit the pits and CS dropped even further I gave up on them. I now own none and even tho I love their innovations and would like to have some IF they worked I just don't trust them to work so own none.

well i am beginning to agree with that  belief. my daily ccw is a taurus, model 606 hammerless .357 and its a flawless piece and works perfect, i bet my life on it, literally
but my other taurus experiences that go back to 1987 sure fit your assessment of the workmanship. having said all that, i believe i can get this gun to work like it should, the fit and finish are beautiful, its just the extraction issue...

I had one for quite a while and it was a pretty good pistol. I did polish the feed ramp with jeweler's rouge when I first got it and you have to keep the chamber clean and dry. The PT22 depends on blow back from a fired round to extract the spent cartridge, so manually cycling the slide will not extract a round since there is no mechanical extractor to pull the shell from the chamber. The high velocity rounds worked better in mine. I usually shot CCI Stingers or Mini-Mags in it and they functioned well. To unload a live round, just tip up the barrel and pop it out. I could barely cycle my slide manually the spring was so strong. My Taurus was much more reliable and accurate than the Beretta 21 I had. Got rid of both when I got the Kel-Tec P3AT.

I would polish the ramp and chamber and get some high velocity ammo and the problem will most likely go away.

thanks greenjeans,
my slide is quite strong too, but not unmanageable. i am surprised to learn there is no extractor, making higher velocity almost a requirment. the manual says not to use high velocity rounds however, lol .. i think i need to run a few hundred rounds thru it before i get a smooth action though.
thanks for the advice .
