Utility rifle supreme

Howdy all, great NEF/H&R forum you have here.  I can't believe I went so long without checking it out.  After reading dozens of posts I'm very intrigued by these handi rifles and I'm looking to buy one (or two) in the near future.  The two models/calibers that I'm leaning toward, primarily because I already have other firearms in these calibers are 30-30 and 45 Colt.

A question that I could use some clarification about is the ease and practicality of barrel removal.  My thought is that I could halve the rifle, carry it inside my pack while backpacking and reassemble it when I reach my hunting destination.  Is my assumption correct?

Yes, barrel removal is easy, remove the forend screw with a phillips screwdriver, or in the case of the Survivor, the screw has a knob, remove the forend, open the action and remove the barrel. The 30-30 barrel is 22" long, the 45Colt carbine barrel is 20" long.

Quick,

Is that knob front screw for the survivor available from the factory?  It would save packing a screw driver.

I am building a small ,packable rife based on  the Handi 30-30.4 inches off the front,one inch off of the the back, slip on Limbsaver, and buttstock ammo carrier. It is 33 inches long and with a 2.5 power Simmons shotgunscope and ammo  weighs @8 pounds.Using my 170gr lfngc on top of a charge of RL15 it is just north of 1950fps,    Doug

I'm sure it is, although it's not on my small parts list, Choate would have it too. You might even find a knob at the local hardware store that would work, it's a standard ¼-20 thread.
