Obturate
« on: February 27, 2008, 04:17:32 PM »
I keep reading about casting bullets too hard that lead because the cylinder chambers are larger than the bullet and because the bullet is too hard, it does not fill out to the cylinder diameter. I guess the leading is caused by gas-cutting at the base of the bullet that flows up the sides, etc. So, what happens if I shoot a .358 hard-cast bullet through a .357 chamber and a .357 bore? Will I still get leading because the bullet does not fill out to fill the forcing cone? I've heard that if you shoot bullets that are too hard, you will get lead buildup at the forcing cone. Is that true?

Does anybody know the true story? If so, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks,

Steve

only time you should get leading in a forcing cone is if the bullet isnt entering it right. Or a chamber thats improperly cut or to rough.  theres  not enough velocity yet to cause leading and probably if there is any gas blow by it hasnt had a chance to damage the  bullet yet. A 358 bullet would sure have no problem in a .357 clyinder chamber or barrel.
