Went to get 300 win bergara barrel
« on: November 13, 2007, 03:40:15 PM »
Well went to the gun shop last week around Saturday and they have 5 300win bergara barrels in stainless steel. I figured well then ill come back on Tues when i get my check. I went after work and they were sold out. they said they would order one and that it might take a while so I passed. searched all over the net and no one had them. Midway doesn't well i figured I would go ahead and get one directly from their site, but Its down does anybody know whats wrong with it or is it just my computer?

at the most $350. i have been looking at the Burris is scope combo but i don't think the quality is a good as the one i looked at last year. and i have eliminated Leupold unless i get a deal and looked at Nikon and haven't even looked at Mueller scopes. so what is the best scope in my price range in your mind.

I still prefer the Leupold scopes..they are still the best IMHO..I recently sold a couple of them on the classified section..

I've got a Mueller Tac II on my 300 WinMag OE, the eye relief is the only bad thing about it at 3.4", it works for me, but it could get a person in trouble if they're not aware of it all the time or have a tendency to crawl the stock.

For a bit more money, I'd go for one of the new Nikon Monarchs, if you want even more eye relief, the Omega has 5", Midsouth has a bunch of em on sale now,

Thanks Tim. The Mueller seems to be a good scope from what i here. I might go with it, I don't tend to craw up on the scope much but it can happen under pressure.

I used to really like the Leupold VX-1, I have 4 of em, but after getting a few Nikons, 4 Prostaffs, 3 Buckmasters, a Monarch and 2 Omegas, I'm thoroughly convinced the Nikon is a better buy and just as good if not better in quality and light transmission, the Monarchs are 95%, and the Buckmasters and Omegas are 92%, the Prostaffs 90%. ;)

I looked at another buckmasters and i really liked it better than my one vx-1. The Leupold is a good scope but Nikon has got them beat. As far as expensive scopes like the vx-L and the vx-7  they are good and compete with zeiss and others.

FWIW...Cabela's has some sales going on if your around any..drop in to one and look at what they carry and if you don't already and want too... get one of their cards to use you wind up with $30-$50 off which puts you in the VX-2's easily or even a 3x9 Ziess Conquest...Both of these scopes are far superior to any of the Monarch's, Buck Masters or Omega's..at least all of them that I have owned or did side by side comparisons with in the last 3 months and have bought 6 scopes...4 Leupold's...2 Nikon's......Computer generated ratings means little to nothing to me...and while they may look great on paper..they hardly ever do as well in your hands...I go by what my eyes can discern between them and choose which is the better...which ever brand it happens to be at the time..I've bought quite a few scopes thru the mail..but isn't my first choice when purchasing one...and would much rather deal with a company that not only will refund your money if you have a problem...but will most likely give an additional price break on what you replace it with if you don't like it...Cabela's is one of the few stores that will do this on their B&M stores ...I know this for a fact because 2 of the 6 scope purchases thru them  I had issues with .and received some real healthy discounts..Like I said...having it in your hands and putting up to your eyes is to me the best way of determining which is better...BTW...in the past...I've seen some VX-1's that were brighter than some of the VX-3's...and actually traded down for 2 VX-1's from a VX-3..It's all up to your eyes...not a machine..to tell the difference..

my relatively new vx1 doesn't compare to the buckmasters but to the lower nikon line the prostaff. yet they are good scopes.the vx2 is like a buckmasters and a monarch comparers to a vx3.   but no i am not around any cableas. i am in sc and the closest places other than the local gun shops are sportsman wearhouse, gander, and bass pro. i order out of cableas though

The main differences between the  VX-1's & the new Buck master's is the eye box and how much of the ocular ring you see When looking thru the Leupold's if you are positioned in the optimum position..you basically have a very thin ring you will see...as compared to a much thicker ring on the Nikon's...In that you have more latitude of head movement to remain in the optimum viewing position with the Leupold's not only side to side...but also forward...and rearward...and still have a clear sight picture... before the ring obstruction or black out. This makes them a much better choice for quick mounting of the rifle...The new Buck Master's are excellent scopes...but..they don't offer this advantage...they have gotten better over the older Buck Master's...but they haven't eliminated this issue nor are they newly as clear edge to edge as the Leupold's either the VX-1 or especially the VX-2 and above. The Omega's have increased their eye relief dramatically over the Buck Master's, at least it is on my 3x9 BDC...It is very clear...but it too suffers in the eye box position.. Both the Omega's and the Buck Master's show signs of sun flaring...while this may not mean much to most..for hunters like myself who hunt both fields and woods...the transitioning between the 2 on bright sunny days can be disconcerting..again...the Leupold's except for the very lowest Rifleman series has no flare at all..The New Monarchs with their new glass coatings have corrected this..and they have improved their light gathering as well...but they too still suffer from the eye box reduction..While this may never matter to many folks..it does to me...I don't always have time for perfect positioning of my head on the stock..because I shoot off hand quite a bit since I do a-lot of still hunting as compared to having a solid rest and the time to put my head in the perfect position...and as such use a scope that allows me the most latitude both in the field..and on the bench... This does matter because I don't have a perfect fit on all of my rifles...if I did...then it wouldn't matter as much...but...varying thickness of different coats & jackets  and coveralls...makes it difficult to have a perfect fit every time...so...the best for me is to get a scope where I am not limited as much...I would suggest you actually go some where that has a try stock and see for yourself...This way...you can make the best determination of what will work best for you...instead of depending on others reviews of the products...Most better gun shops that sell a lot of scopes should have one there..and should be willing to allow you to compare them...Doing this usually sorts them out very quickly....It's a whole lot different when they are actually mounted  and you are actually seeing what they will look like on a rifle stock...than just being talked about...Just remember to take along your hunting jackets or coats...this will make a big difference in wither the scope fits you right...

The way you hunt is the way I hunt most of the time. I hardly ever notice anything like what you say when I am up to shoot. On my vx1 and my other buckmaster scopes I have noticed the difference. I have about always bought leupold vx3 scopes and I have probably have over 50 of them in use. But as far as buckmasters I only have 3 and I don't use them that often. I probably will try a different scope maybe a Muller if I order one. I might also look into the different Conquest but Ill have to wait a while on it if I do indeed go get one. I might also look into the Bushnell 3200/4200 lines w/ firefly. I don't own one so maybe this is the gun for one. I have used old cheap Bushnell's on my stand by rifles and they have taken many deer over the course of the last 20 years. As far as me wearing coats while hunting I normally go and wear many layers and a small coat, I don't really worry about the cold as much down here unless its raining.
