Michigan Elk Hunting
« on: August 22, 2007, 03:25:15 PM »
Has anyone here ever got a elk license, if so did you draw a Bull or Cow license?

In January 2007 I was drawn for a cow permit. I acquired a guide in the Atlanta area, where I wanted to hunt, 2 weeks ahead of the 5 day season start. My guide then recruited help from 3 of his buddies  to help him out in finding a cow elk for me. On the first day of the hunt,we tracked 4 bulls down,no cows in sight.
The second and third days we still hadn't seen a cow, but had seen more bulls. The 4rth day of the trip we managed to find 13 elk in an area that was being clear cut. Of the 13 ,there was 1 cow, 2 calves and 10 bulls. One of which was a beautiful  6x7......a real monster, he was awesome. Anyway, I shot the cow which dressed at about 370lbs.

This was taken just west of Atlanta by maybe 10 miles.
It seems as though the cows are hard to find,as the state wants the bulls for tourists attraction. So not very many bull permits issued.

How was your luck with the elk?  :)

Yep sure did never again my brother and I both draw cow tags . But are hunts started at different times. My brother got a guide that ripped him off it wasn't funny we were hunting on this private land. Here comes this guy his kids down the road going for a walk never seen a elk hunted for a week up there. After that I didn't buy my lic I felt like killing this old man that was 70. He told us he had access to all this land wasn't so. He told us we would see elk didn't see one.

gooser, I drew a cow permit in '01 for around the atlanta area as well, but seen far more cows than bulls. I was paired up [by our guide] with a guy with a bull permit and he hunted longer than I did before he took a beautiful 8x8. I elected to take a smaller cow for the meat, as I wasnt gonna have a cow mounted anyway.

olbifer,...when I hunted atlanta in jan 07, the locals were even saying they were seeing very few cows. I am curious to see the results of this fall/winter hunt. I didn't mount this one either. But I must say it was good eating... :D

Years ago my dad got a Mi. bull tag...  He drove up there and stayed in a camper on his pu...  He dove around on back roads and two tracks roads untill he found what he figured was a "bull track" that crossed the two track he was on.  He then, parked the pu and tracked the track  untill he came up on nice bull, and shot it...

I went up with a buddy of mine in 1998. He drew a cow tag. He had the 2nd hunt. NEVER seen a cow. Seen bulls every day. Had some locals help us out, great people. They were bummed out they couldn't find us a cow. The DNR said cows were harder to hunt. We were all over the area. Gaylord, Onaway, Lewiston,Atlanta and Wolverine.

stanley, yes, exactly my hunt was the same way, it seems as though the cows are the real trophy's.The locals, like you say don't even see them too often. If we shoot off all the cows and keep the bulls for the tourist attraction, then what.......we have no elk herd. I can't believe the DNR doesn't see it that way. >:(

Were all the Elk collar tagged?  Also where's Atlanta located?

No, all the elk were not collared. The DNR collars only a few in each area to keep better track of the herd. When they want to find a herd, then they radio track them down and check on their status.
Atlanta, is in montmorency county, located on US 32  and 33 intersection. It is east of Gaylord and west of Hillman.
