Ammo Holder?
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:27:21 AM »
I've had H&R and NEF rifles for years, but always centerfires, and have used ammo holders that slipped over the butt stock.  In the last years I've added 22 LR and a 22 Magnum rifles to my rifle rack and haven't figgured out the best way to carry extra ammunition so that it is readily available for quick reloading.  If I carry the extra ammo in my pocket I have to dig it out before I can load it and if I carry a round or two in my hand then I lose the use of the hand or may drop it.

So, thought I'd query everyone on how they carry extra ammo for 22's when they are hunting???????

It seems that no one has an alternative to using your pocket to keep spare ammo in.

Well, I'm thinking about drilling 3 holes in the top of the stock just behind where I grip the rifle.  This would put three rounds about 6 inches from the chamber and in a consistent orientation so that will some practice I should be able to load a follow-up shot in a few seconds, maybe even be able to keep my eyes on the squirrel or rabbit that I miss.  (Of course, if I didn't miss the first shot I wouldn't need a follow-up shot!)

BTW--I did find a couple ammo holders at Midway, but one was nothing more than another pocket, and the other didn't attach to the rifle.

I have used old police ammo dump pouches with mine. They attach to your belt and snap open. I mostly use them for my Marlin .357 Mag rifle.

i took a 1" piece of nylon strap and sewed a short piece of elastic webbing, like small kids have in their waistbands, to the nylon strap. i made three divided sections that hold shells, like a buttstock holder only smaller. i added velcro to the ends of the strap and it attaches around the forend, sliding under the front end of the scope mount. sorry i don't have any to send a picture.

I either carry in a dump pouch or a film canister in my shirt pocket.

If you are looking for quick, easy access, how about a home-made speed strip.  I use a Bianchi speed strip for easy reloading of my .357.  I suppose that you could make something similar for a .22 with a strip of rubber and a punch.  Punch holes that are fairly tight but will pull over the rim.  Push a shell in, slip the shell into the chamber and pull the rubber away with a tearing motion.

I have made holster style loop carriers for slings, belts and but stock cuffs by punching holes in them and lacing the appropriate size leather lace through them and stiching the ends tight, you can get the supplies from tandy leather to make a holder easily especially if you have a leather sling, just punch a few round holes and use something about like leather boot lace to make some loops just keep them tight and they should work fine you can use bigger lace and a slot punch if you want.

I bot an Allen butt stock ammo holder from Midway. All of my rifles have Allen butt stock ammo holders on 'em. they are cheap (like $5 each) and they work. So, how can you argue with that.

Anyway, I bot a Allen butt stock ammo holder and then I took my "Speedy Stitch er AwL" and sewed each cartridge holder right up the middle. Now, it's a perfect fit for my 22 mag cartridge's. I have not tried a 22LR, but I would think it would have no problem with that.

Here is a picture of my sewing work:

I would suggest you buy an old, nasty buttstock off of someone to test your drilling idea, prior to going at it on your rifle. That way you can test the location, spacing, depth,etc... before regretting it later. :P

I like Davemuzz's idea, looks very functional.  Would be very simple to make/modify.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I was looking at one of those ammo holders at Wal-Mart last night and I thought I had seen them before.  I think I am getting a couple of them this weekend.  I'll ask to "borrow" the better half's sewing machine.  That almost guarantees that she'll sew it for me rather than letting me mess with her machine :-)

I have an old Kenmore standard sewing machine that is very well buiilt that I do all my heavy duty sewing on, I've built several canvas tarps and a couple whelen tents with it, as long as you have heavy duty needles, it will sew it!! ;)

I used to have an old White treadle sewing machine that my grandmother had given me.  I used it a little mostly to repair tents or to make bags out of old blue jean material and to repair pack straps.  It actually got used maybe once a year.  The wife encouraged one of the kids to take it to their house.  I think they had it about a year and then got rid of it without letting me know.  No one would ever admit as to what happened to it, other than it was gone.   :'(

i use a small canister that i found at an army surplus table at the gun show. it was a personal decontamination kit. hard plastic, with a somewhat softer plastic lid.  long the lines of a film canister, but about the size of a closed fist.  lid was tethered to the canister by a nylon loop with a small wire clip/clasp.  you could thread your belt through the loop.  held about 250 shells.  i bought it for a buck, but rarely see them any more.  if i see them again, i'll buy every one i they have.

another option, acecase.com has a .22 ammo holder, that is like the above mentioned elastic band butt ammo holders, but instead of elastic loops, there is a small pouch, with a snap top.  probably holds 50-100 rounds, for around $5, if i remember correctly

I have been using a small (cigarette pack sized) pouch that I found at a yard sale for a couple of years now. Its basically a cordura nylon belt pouch with a zipper top and holds 100rds of my favorite 22LR's and it even has a small zipper pouch on the front where I can carry a few shorts, calibris's, shotloads or whatever and have them  seperated. I see these bags new all the time at Wally World for around $3, or you can get one like I did at a tag sale for a quarter.

For the fellows that carry .22 ammo loose in your pockets....DO NOT put a 9volt battery in the same pocket!

I was tree-rat hunting a couple of years ago, and when I got home I cleaned out my truck and stuffed my pockets full of the things that collect in the cupholder....cubbyhole in the dash... etc.

Lo-and-behold a .22 went off in my shirt pocket scaring the bageesus outa' me!
