Question On Stainless........
« on: June 16, 2003, 11:28:40 AM »
My experiences with stainless finishes on rifles isn't good.  The only one I ever bought caused me to loose a very nice 6x6 Elk.  The finish on that rifle, a Ruger M77 in .270 Win., flashed like a mirror and the synthetic stock was anything but quiet.  Every time you bumped it against something it would sound like a drum.  Outside of being, weather proof(?????), what use are they.  Wouldn't they scare half the game in Africa flashing around?  What I want is the opinion of those that have been there or use one for hunting.  Lawdog

Question On Stainless........

Lawdog, I have a Sako in stainless and have had a Weatherby in stainless.  Both rifles had a flat non-shine barrel.  I have friends who have the same rifles and I have never seen any flash from the barrels.  Now that is not the case with the Rugers or Remingtons I have seen.  But I do understand what you are talking about.  Dont you have any stainless Weatherbys?  The one I had (like my Sako) had a kind of bead blast finish.
Life is short......eternity is long.

longwinters,

Nope, all of my Weatherby's are Mark V Deluxe's.  All with that deep blue finish and true wood stocks.  The only rifle I own now that has a stainless barrel is my new Winchester M70 Coyote in .223 WSSM.  And as soon as I can find a process that will blue the barrel to my satisfaction(maybe a matte finish) I intend to change it's finish.  The stainless finish on the Coyote puts a glare in the scope that breaks my concentration while shooting.  Without the sun shade attached to the scope it was flat out hard to see anything.  Also going to restock it as soon as the stock blank gets here from Royal Arms.  I don't like laminated stock's either.  Lawdog

Question On Stainless........
« Reply #3 on: June 18, 2003, 04:00:08 PM »
I ahve hunted with SS rifles exclusive for the last ten years or more of my life. I have never seen a single problem or had any concern. The matte finish of my guns is no different in appearance then a dry grey branch from  a tree.

I will be sending my 375HH to ROBAR for their treatment of the gun. It will make the steel parts black. I'm doing this for the corrosion resistance more then the worry of the silver finish.

I have had this converstation with countless guys over the years but the proof is in the success with my gun. It's loaned out to several hunters in Africa and Alaska each year. I have never had a single guy complain or lose game because of the SS matte finish. I need to hunt for an outfitter in Alaska this year for 14 days taking a man for a Brown bear. I want my rifle as salt water resistant as possible. This Robar finish is the best finish going today. I'll post some photo's when I get it back.

Nice to see you back, how was the huntin?  Do you have an address for ROBAR as I have heard some good things about his process.  Lawdog

This should do it! The hunting was as usual outstanding. My biggest challange to date was the ten year old with zero attention span. Still took some game but not withou the loss of some hair!

I can't let you get away with just saying that.  There's got to be a story behind that statement.  By the way Thank You for the address.  Lawdog

Sorry folks I screwd something up. I started a new thread with the off topic comments on the children hunting. I unfortunately closed out of the page before I saved it properly and the text was lost.  Man I feel foolish deleting posts but I am sincerely sorry for that. I will start a new thread and we can begin again. There were only two posts lost and one was mine.
