9.3x62 CZ 550 full stock
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:15:05 PM »
I am really happy with this gun.  I had it at the range this week to check Zero on a new batch of reloads for my Moose hunt in a couple weeks.  A pretty stout Nosler book load with a 286 grn Nosler Partition.  It shoots just over 1" @ 100yds.  I think the gun would do better with another shooter, it has about the same recoil as a 300 Win Mag but delivers it in more of a big push than a sharp slap.  Anyhow I have a lot of confidence in it since I used it to flatten my 400 lb. black bear.  These pumkin bullets lay the law down especially a Partition or other premium bullet.

I bought this gun because of some beautiful turkish walnut for a everyday gun and not much more.  I never dreamed I would use it this much.  I have a 1.5x 4 scope on it.  It comes up fast and has a very large field of view.  JJack said he would be go hunting dangerous game with it if I came there and it was legal in that area.  This is a very popular caliber in Africa and in Europe for large Boer.    It was amazing with the bear to see it hit the ground dead before the sound of the shot had passed completly off a small pond I was next to, (echo).

I guess faster and flatter has it's place along with BIGGER and BADDER!

Congrats to your CZ 550 and the 9.3x62.
I use the 9.3x64 and since a year now, the 9.3x62 with a 20" barrel ,as well. They sure knock them down.I have never used the Partition in either gun, but no matter what  i use, they all seem to shoot. With the right bullet and the right scope, even 300 yds is not a problem, as long as you know your ballistic.
Good choice,bud.

The differences ballistically between the 9.3x62 and a .35 whelen are the same as the differences between a .270 Win and .280 Remington.  If the .270 Win is an excellent round, so is the .280 Rem; likewise there isn't any discernible differences between the .35 whelen and the 9.3x62 on game using equivalent bullets and rifle twist.   Both examples are of classic, efficient, and great cartridges.

What bullet and powder combinations does she like?  I have the same thing, but topped with a Weaver Grand Slam...  This winter I plan on working up some loads for her with 250gr. Accubonds.

RL 15 for 286 grn.  Work up to 58-59 grns.  Load came from a phone call with John Nosler.  I was quite surprized when I called to get load help and he answered.  He really likes to talk calibers and bullets.   He uses it for Elk.  In the call he laughed and called the big bullet a pumpkin bullet.  Thought that was quite a good comparison.   2 1/2'' high @ 100yd, dead on @ 200, 10" low @300.   Remember not my load I got it from John Nosler and that was a pretty informative and cool phone call.  What a nice guy!

Thanks Buckfever!!!  I went with the 250gr. to make 'er a 300yds. elk rifle...  Seems you had no problem with that using the Partition.

The 250 gr X worked wonderfully for me in 2003 in Africa. From porcupine to eland, from 25 to 250 yards the bullet just worked. I loaded it to 2650 fps in my 24" FN Mauser.

Did you mean Boar as in Pig or are you planning a trip back in time to South Africa and shoot the Dutch settlers known as the Boers?  Sorry I had to.  History A hole.  Hope your trip is successful.  I like the CZ rifles and want a 9.3X62 FS too.
