357 Mag gets one this morning.

Finally got some blood on a rifle this morning. First deer of the season(s) for me here. Big thanks goes out to Digger for providing a nice hunting spot. It was a  funny horned 7 point hit right in front of the right shoulder quartering to me at about 72 yards with my 357 Mag Handi. The pistol bullet, a 158 gr. XTP Federal factory load didn't perform really well. It didn't pass through and made only a small entrance wound, even looks like it may have started expanding on impact. Took out a lung and a part of the other one. Dead deer yes, but he did run about 100 yards in a right, left, then left again pattern. Left a followable blood trail but I have seen better. Anyway it certainly has taken the edge off and I can still take a doe now before rifle season ends here on Dec. 2. Here's some pics, look closely at the one of the entrance wound, notice the two seperate penetrating holes, it was only about half a dime sized all together.

I like the stocks on that rifle, it's a good looking setup.

Congratulations !!!

Did you recover the bullet? I would like to see a picture of the bullet if at all possible. I really like the XTP's in .357 and 45 colt in my handloads.

Didn't get that bullet back. Didn't even think about it until afterward actually. Think I may go to a flat nosed bullet in factory rounds for this one. The XTP's would probably perform better at closer ranges, say 30-50 yards.

Congrats i found the flat bullets work better on deer than the hp just my .02 i did try the winchester surp. 180 part. DID NOT PREFORM WELL AT ALL!!!!

Yep, dead is dead, and meat for the freezer!

Might try a different bullet and or closer shots, but it did the job and that's what you want!

Thanks for posting the pictures, because it's always enjoyable to me to see someone have success, and kind of gives the rest of us some incentive to get out and hunt!

Yep,that was corn in the back of the truck.The buck was up in the back of the truck trying to pull on the right piece of string to open the bag when John shot him. :D :D :D :D   Digger
