Handi rifle results on deer so far.
« on: November 26, 2007, 03:01:37 AM »
Just got back from 8 days in Alabama last night.  Our lease had a biologist check the herd out, and he recommended taking out a bunch of does.   I broke in a couple of handi's while I was there.  I took the 30-30, and Shorty.  Shorty is my 45-70 with the barrel cut off to 17 inches, sporting a Redfield 4X32 scope.  It is a box blind special.   One deer at 125 yds over a food plot, 30-30 handi.  Bang-flop.  One small doe at 70 yds over a food plot, 45-70.  Thirty yd. tracking job.   Two does about 100 yds. out, in a clear cut, 45-70.  Five minutes apart, 2 bang-flops.   Now I start working on getting one with a decent rack, I'm getting tired of skinning does.  I've got 7 so far this year, 6 with handi rifles, 1 with a muzzle loader.  I got the biggest one I ever got in SC, using a 35 Whelen handi.  He was an 8 pt, 160 lbs.   I get tickled watching these guys who think that buying a $900 rifle and a $500 makes up for learning how to hunt, and especially how to shoot.   Handi rifles rule!
