Ammo & loads for .22 Hornet
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:40:44 PM »
I am pretty sure that there will be a CZ 527 American .22 Hornet in my gun safe soon.  Anyone have any suggestions at to good factory ammo?

I'll start working up my own loads eventually and I'm also interested in any good loads.  I'm more interested in accuracy at 100 yards than a hot, fast load.  I'll be shooting coyotes, groundhogs and an occasional fox when they are in season here in Ohio.

with the hornet the "hot, fast loads" can be very accurate. my savage model 40 averages 1/4 inch 5-shot groups at 100 yards with 13.0 grains of lil gun and a 40 gr v-max. my handi hornet averages 1/2 inch with the same load. i have had some good luck with the winchester 46 gr factory loads  (1/2 inch in the savage) and the hornady 35 gr v-max factory load (3/4 inch in the handi). if you want the the best hornet loads for speed or accuracy i suggest you handload. lil gun has opened up a whole new world for the hornet.

I definitely will be hand loading, but thought I'd run a couple boxes of factory ammo through until my dies get here.

Dang boy - take that old rifle to a benchrest match, you'll clean up with that small of an aggregate!  ::)

Star1pup,
Winchester and Remington both have "plain" hollowpoint and softpoint loads, about 45 grains I think.  Hornady loads their 35 grain V-Max for the hornet.  Also check out Hunting Shack ammo.  I think Cabela's still carries that brand.  This ammo has several different bullet weights available.  I currently don't own a rifle in the 22 Hornet, but I've been yearning for a Ruger #1 in this round for a looooooong time  :'(.  Have fun with that CZ!

lone star,

not to hijack the thread, but unfortunately 1/4 inch aggregate wont do much these days, at least not in most classes, hunter class i could stand a chance, shots are for score and not group size. on a lucky day i could MAYBE stand a chance in light varmint class. ive shot some local competition benchrest before and got cleaned out with a rifle that printed better than that.

For factory loads.  I would start with the Winchester 46 gr hollow point.  Followed by the Hornady 35 V Max.

For value the Wisconsin Cartridge Co. has a 45 gr HP / 50 box approx. $22.00 that others report as good.

You can reload the Hornet well with a simple Lee Classic Loader and dippers.
