Hollow Point Ammo for PT92
« on: March 07, 2006, 10:04:03 AM »
Does know of hollow point ammo that feeds well in a 9mm PT 92?  Mine doesn't like Win 115gr HPs.

Thanks!

What problem are you having with it?  I have shot a magazine of Winchester JHP's that I keep loaded at home with no problems.  Can't remember the bullet weight, will have to look when I get home.  I shot the whole 17rd magazine without a problem just to verify they worked.  I shoot lots of CCI blazer FMJ both brass and aluminum cases without any problems and have went through 1000 rds of Winchester white box FMJ, just thought it left more residue than the CCI so I went back to CCI.

It's hanging on the ramp

There is a ramp on the frame and one cut into the barrel.   There is a gap between the two. The HP ammo hangs up on the second ramp - the one on the barrel.

FMJ feed fine....

I will look at mine when I get home today for that gap and try to take a measurement or photo or something and also check to see what weight of Winchester JHP I have.

Two things I am thinking, there is something wrong with the frame or the barrel causing that gap to be too big or misaligned.

Are you using factory magazines?  What capacity?  Does it do it with more than one magazine?  I am thinking the second possibility may be that the front of the feed lips may be too tight not allowing enough upward slant to the rounds being chambered.  If you have a spare magazine you might want to try to widen the feed lips in the front.

From your avatar, were/are you a LT Col in the Air Force?  I am still active duty.  You might want to see if you can compare the Taurus to a Beretta M9 from work.  I think the barrels are even interchangeable between the two.

Hope this helps, will get back to you,
John

Thanks for your help!

First, my avatar.  The picture doesn't show it very well - but my shoulder boards are gray rather than blue.  I'm a Ch/Capt in Civil Air Patrol (USAF Aux).  I'm with a cadet squadron.  We teach leadership to young people and perpare them for military life.

I had to meet the same requirements as USAF chaplains, except for age and health - niether of which I could possibly meet :)  Prior to this I was a police chaplain.

Ironically, my civilian pastoral duties will soon take me to Brooks Army Medical center.  One of my members was burned badly by an RPG while serving in Iraq.  He's a good kid who was very active in church and helped out with our cadet program too.  He was very badly burned - and would not be here if it were not for the courage of his buddies, who got him out of the vehicle, put out the fire on his uniform and got him to his feet and into the next vehicle in the convoy.  They did all this under small arms fire.  Talk about bravery......

But on to the topic at hand.....I haven't actually fired any of this ammo.  I have worked it through the action - pulling the slide all the way back and letting it go.

Doing that, the HPs hang up consistently about 10% of the time.  This happens with all mags - including the two factory mags.  It seems to happen when there are 5 or fewer rounds in the magazine.  I would say that the mag spring was too light - but it it so stiff I have to use a loader to get the rounds in.

I probably need to take it out to the hang and run a box through it - but this kind of makes me nevous about depending on this stuff (Win 115gr HP).   I think they will probably jam when fired too.

Thanks again for your help - AND FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR NATION!

Hi Vince,

The small picture did look like an Air Force uniform.  Sorry to hear about our hero, I hope and pray for his recovery.

I checked my PT-92.  I have Winchester 147 gr JHP's loaded.  I manually cycled a magazine full and the last few rounds did seem to go in a bit rougher then the first rounds, but they all made it just fine.  I have just a tiny ramp on the top of the magazine well on the frame.  There is maybe a .1 to .2" gap between the frame and the barrel.  The nose of the bullets as they are feeding completely clear the ramp on the frame.  Then it seems like just about the same time as the nose of the bullet hits the ramped part of the barrel, the ramp on the frame starts to contact the bullet about halfway back.  Then the slide pushes the nose of the bullet against the ramp on the barrel and it pops up into the chamber.

Maybe you have a weak slide spring?  I am not sure if a gunsmith could check the weight of the spring or not.  I would go ahead a shoot a magazine on the range, there is a lot more vibration and force when the gun is fired vice cycling by hand.

Let me know if you need anything else or pictures,
John

I own a pt-92 afs. Got it a few months back and put about 700rds through it so far. Consisting of various hollow point loads, and fmj. I have not had any jams, or problems at all. Here is what I use in my pt-92.

Remington UMC 115 gr fmj
Federal Hydra-Shok 124 gr Hollow point
Federal Hydra-shok 135 gr Hollow Point
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr Hollow point

The problem was the magazines.  Mec Gear after market mag will only feed FMJ.  Factory 10 rnd mags feed the HP ammo fine.
