Any wildcats based on the 338 Winchester Magnum?
« on: March 19, 2007, 08:52:51 AM »
I have a[left hand] Savage 116 in 338WinMag.I no longer need the 338 [got a 375H&H instead].
If I don't manage to trade/sell this rifle,are there any interesting[and easily
made] wildcats based on the 338WinMag cartridge[or that will use the same bolt as the 338]?
Thanks.

There are lots of choices for wild cats based on the original short magnum cases.  YOu could do any number of things such as: 30-338, 308 Norma, 358 Norma, 375 Taylor, 9.3-338, 264 win, 7mm wby, etc... lots of choices.  I designed my own wildcat based on the 338 case, and while I probably wouldn't do it again, but it does what I wanted it to.

I did a 30-338mag  you could do the 7Rem mag or 264 mag.  Those are the easy ones without really having to do alot of fireforming.  Well good luck

.338 is the .300 H&H blown out and shortened to work thru .30/'06 length actions.  The "short magnum." It would help to know what you want to shoot. You can go up. .358 Norma is almost the same in .35. There is a .375 on this case. Equals the .375 H&H at higher pressures. .458 Winchester is the case blown out straight... Or do you like recoil???

Or, on the down side, 7 Remington Magnum is on this body. .264 Winchester. .308 Norma or .30/.338 wildcat which has a fantastic rep for performance. I think the .257 Weatherby is on this case with a poor rep for barrel life if you shoot alot and considerable meat destruction... Shortened, 6.5 Rem Mag or .350 Rem mag. Might have feeding difficulties, but what the heck. What is your Pleasure? What does your budget permit? Enjoy! Happy trails...

Thanks for the advice/thoughts.I already have a 300WinMag[26" heavy tube- weighs 12.5 lbs with scope&bipod],and the FLSS is a push feed.
If the head size was the same as a '06,I'd consider the 9,3x62.
For critters that bite,I think I'd prefer sticking with a controlled feed mechanism.
Probably simplest solution all things considered, is to sell the beast at a reasonable price.

This is a savage, correct?  You can swap bolt heads on the savage actions.... If you've a 375 H&H, I would skip the 9.32x62.  It offers nothing that the 375 cannot match and exceed.

The 8mm/338 Mag is another choice.  However, there is not too much difference between the two.  I have one only because I wanted to salvage an 8x57 Mauser.
You should have said something; I didn't know I had struck a nerve.
