Throating extends the distance to the lands so bigger bullets can be seated to the overall cartridge length listed in data, the reamer deepens the usable throat length, in fact, H&R's don't really have a throat, the rifling just starts abruptly, the reamer creates a tapered leade or gentle approach for the bullet.

Question Quicktdoo?  I've read you've had this done before; did you do it yourself?  If so could anyone do it or is it a gun smiths job?  I live in an area where I would have to send mine off, I would rather do it myself if it's not to technical.  Thanks.

I would ask Joe about throating the 90 if he doesn't chime in, I doubt you'll need to do that, the reamer will likely take care of it, but he'll know for sure since he's done a couple. ;)

Sorry, I was out at the range proofing "Big Nose Kate", and I got back late.

The 90 stock throat is similar to the standard .45-70....................pretty much none. My 90's are throated to an additional .240" although I would recommend .200-.240". Decide what bullet you want to use first, check it's seating depth from the lands and ONLY then start throating.........you can always cut more, but you can't put it back.
