AFAIK, the safety will only engage if the hidden/internal hammer's cocked, and whether or not the chamber's empty or filled is immaterial. I doubt that the system's been changed for that one model.
The safety is non-automatic on every #1 I've ever handled - i.e., you must consiously move it to the safe position (or not).
The tip of the cocked hammer can be seen/felt through the small window in the action floor, immediately ahead of/in the leading edge of, the lever.
