Ruger #1 Safety Question
« on: December 08, 2007, 04:42:26 AM »
I just picked up a Ruger #1 K1A in 35 Whelen This is my first #1 so I have a question about the safety. Will the tang safety not engage until there is a round in the chamber? I just receive the rifle last night & I never need an instruction manual to operate a safety before....Any input would be appreciated.......Thanks

AFAIK, the safety will only engage if the hidden/internal hammer's cocked, and whether or not the chamber's empty or filled is immaterial.  I doubt that the system's been changed for that one model.

The safety is non-automatic on every #1 I've ever handled - i.e., you must consiously move it to the safe position (or not).

The tip of the cocked hammer can be seen/felt through the small window in the action floor, immediately ahead of/in the leading edge of, the lever.
