First Deer with the Sidekick
« on: December 06, 2007, 06:01:20 AM »
Well here in Western NY we have a few days of regular season left before late Archery/ muzzle loader season. After taking a nice buck last Thursday with the 30-30 I decided last night that I would take my sidekick with me today. We had some really heavy snow this past week (16 inches on Mon. and Tues.) so I decided to try some of the state land near me that I was seeing alot of deer in this summer. I got there at about 10 after 7 and started finding alot of tracks from last night. I started following them real slow and after about an hour and a half I found the first bedding area and counted 27 beds, six that were fresh. I started tracking again and came to another bedding area and counted 19 more beds. It had snowed about 2 more inches throughout the night so there was alot of snow still on the branches making it hard to see what was ahead of me. I knew that there were deer moving because I was following fresh tracks. After about half an hour of not being able to see anything moving I started heading to the truck planning to come back this evening after some wind knocked some of the snow down. I was about 200 yards from the truck when i saw some movement off to my left. Looking over I could make out 4 deer moving through the trees. I picked an opening and waited for them to enter it. When they did I made a small bleat to get them to stop. I picked the largest doe and fired from a distance of about 60 yards. After the smoke and falling snow cleared i was able to see here laying there. 1 shot from the Sidekick and she dropped in here tracks. When I got her home I hung her on the scale and was very pleased to see that she weighed in at 147 pounds with the hide still on. Once again I am very impressed with the way a NEF shoots. Out of the past 9 deer I have taken 5 have gone down with one shot from a NEF. One was with another rifle and the other 3 were with a bow.

Sounds like you had a good time tracking.  I have about come to the conclusion that I could wait at the truck and see about as many deer or more than I do when I am in the woods.   ;)

Way to go Meatball, just wondering what load you are shooting out of your side-kick?

Thanks Guys.

Elmo I used 80 grains of loose 777 powder under a .44 cal Hornady XTP in a TC Breakaway sabot. This load gives me a 1-1.5 inch group at 150 yards wild very mild recoil. The only drawback is the amount of damage it does. A small .44 hole going in but an exit wound large enough to put your hand in. I shot a deer last year with my old CVA using the same load and literally blew the heart out of the chest. I deffinately do not even want to think about or see the amount of damage it would do with a hit to the hind quarter.
