Any of these out there...
« on: December 01, 2007, 05:32:34 AM »

Are there any of the 6.5 Italian Carcanos out there ? In spite of the terrible incident one was involved in, are they a decent deer rifle..accurate ?

Are they still available, along with brass & loading supplies ?

Carcano Carbines are available.  Some are accurate, others may not be.  I had two for a number of years back in the late 60s and they were good accurate shooters.  Handloads in that cailber were effective on whitetail, hog and small bear.  Dies are available;  brass can be had from Grafs; and they shoot just fine with Hornady 6.5mm bullets.  HTH and good luck.  Mikey.

They take a .268 bullet which is not widely available. I don't know if anyone besides Hornady offers them. The sights are horrid. Carbines made by cutting down the rifle barrel will not shoot the Hornady bullets - the barrels are gain twist and the shorter barrels don't have enough twist.

If you want a deer rifle there are plenty more out there even among the milsurp types that are probably better bargains and easier to find ammo for. The Russian Mosin Nagants are very plentiful now and while soft point ammo is going to run you about the cost of more domestic commercial ammo the same can be said for the Carcanos. Mausers are not quite as cheap as MNs now but you can get them in unfired condition for not much more.
