which scopes mounts and rings hold up to big recoil..
« on: October 22, 2007, 12:13:44 PM »
Which  >>
 1. scopes
 2. mounts and
 3. rings
>>hold up to heavy recoil... 460 and 358.
I hear my little 308 is not enough recoil to worry about.. by comparison.

also : does the same answer hold true if it is ported ?
on rings and mounts : I hear about tsob, warne, but need more information.. and as many choices as possible..
on scopes I hear about leupold, and and sometimes burris..

also : what about the red dot sights on hard recoiling handguns... ? those with 2 minute dots seem about right for accuracy.

thanks to all

I would tend to lean towards any major brand name with three rings...Warne, T'SOB, EABCO, MGM...all make excellent mounts and rings...but I do like the idea of three rings for the support...as for the 308...you can get away with two rings if you want...

Red dots have held up really well for me over the years...I have an UltraDot with a 1 MOA dot and several Bushnell Trophy's...they have held up to a 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant, a 44 Mag Super Blackhawk, and a 12 gauge shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads...I'll let you know how well it handles the 375 JDJ this weekend...

I am really anxious to know how it works with that JDJ.
Glad to know it is not just the ultradot that has given good service on recoiling guns... the prices are far superior to scopes.. I was not aware of the different rings and mounts available... thanks..
any body else ?

As for scopes:

1.  T/C makes (or rather sells) 1-4X, 2-7X and 3-9X "recoil proof" scopes.  I broke 2 of the 1-4X models on a 460 & 500 S&W (both replaced free by T/C).  I haven't broken either of the other 2 yet but I also haven't subjected them to such severe recoil.

2.  I broke a Bushnell Trophy 2-6X scope on my 460 S&W.  They didn't honor their warranty saying it had been "abused."

3.  I've used Leupold scopes on a 50 AE, a 460 S&W, a 500 S&W and a 7mm/08 and haven't broken any yet.

4.  Burris scopes have a good reputation but I've never tried one of their handgun versions.

As far as mounting handgun scopes is concerned, I had real problems keeping them in place on the 460 & 500 S&W.  I sent both barrels in to SSK Industries for the 6 screw 4 ring T'SOB base.  They even mounted the scopes for me.  I had never been able to get the 500 S&W to do better than 2 or 3 inch 100 yard groups.  Lo and behold, using Sierra 400 gr. Sports Master bullets with the T'SOB base/rings and a Leupold 2.5-8X VX III scope, the gun would do 1 to 1.5 inch 100 yard groups.  For the heavy kickers, I don't plan on using anything but the T'SOB base in the future.

update: I now will have leupolds for the heaviest kicking pistols,( 460, 358Win, 308  ) and putting a 3x TC on a lighter recoiling unit ( a 223 ) .....  I am going to see what bases and rings I have then will go to a stronger base and rings as needed.... will probably go to the specialty rings and mounts but could try three rings on long one peice weaver type bases first if I have all that I need to try it for free... I will lap the rings, nail polish the screws, put a little electrical tape on the inside of the rings or something like that... I forget what other steps may secure the scope but will do a search.. I assume the most critical ones are the 460 and 358 then the 308 in that order....
it may be I just need to get three tsob bases, etc. right out of the box.. .will probably not be able to shoot the things for a while, now anyway.. so the money at the moment of their arrival will not matter ( kinda good and kinda bad. )
I was surprised that no one suggested the tactical type rings that are buillt so sturdily... wonder about that.. they fit the weaver style bases, and look solid for sure.....but I am asking for advice and just wondering that's all.

Not sure but have you tried to find a Redfield 3 ring base.  I've used them for years, just use a piece of friction tape in the rings and the scopes not going anywhere.

Or you could do like this guy did and........

If your barrel is tapped for 6 holes, use the Weaver Base with Burris Z rings.

I have this on all my barrels, including the 375JDJ and have never had a problem with any movement.

I've used the Redfield three ring base and rings for 6 years on my .454 Casull with no problems.  I do make sure that I back the scope up to the turret as a mechanical stop and it has not marked or damaged a scope yet.  I had a Leupold 4x scope on it for 6 years and just bought a used Burris 2.5-7x for it.  The Leupold was great and I sighted it in...once in 6 years!  The Burris has been very good for me so far, although it's a much heavier and longer scope.

The Burris Signature Zee rings are the way to go.  Unbelievable grip and won't scratch your scope.

I've used both the T/C Duo ring base With a Leupold M8 2x scope  and the Burris Signature dual dovetail rings and bases with a Burris 2 x7 Posi lock on my 30/06 handgun. Both held up well, but the Burris scope won't fit the T/C Duo ring without modification. I believe the '06 is plenty enough recoil, thank you.
