Which Barrel?????
« on: November 27, 2007, 03:46:32 PM »
Hey folks. I am new to the center fire rifle world. Living in central Illinois, there really is no need for anything other than a .22 or a .17. Well I finally laid down my Optima Pro 50 and bought an Elite. It has been talking to me through the box, wanting me to go shoot her .  :o My question to y'all is on a CF barrel....What would the best all around barrel be for me? I would be using it to destroy cyotes (don't care much for the hides; just want em dead) here in Illinois; however, I would also want something to go out west with and take care of an elk at a decent distance. Any suggestions will be taken as helpfull....Seems like y'all know a heck of alot about this neck of the woods than I do.......

Thanks in advance...

Ken

The 30 06 is in the middle of the pack(308,30 06 and the 300 Win mag.) so that's what I think I would go with. The 300 Win ammo is more expensive, and the 06 and the 308 are about the same.   Digger

Thanks Digger. Now excuse my ignorance; but when the barrel says "300 Win" does that automatically mean it is a "300 Win Mag"? Is there such a thing as a 300 win and also a 300 win mag?

Thanks

300 Win is  a 300 Winchester Magnum, see my thread on page 3. ;)

Okedoke....I think I have decided on the 300 win mag. Even though the price of ammo is a little pricey; I think it will be worth it in the long run having the ability to reach out and touch just about anything I want...........Next dillema for me.......What would a good starter round be to use. I have noticed that just about everyone has experimented with all of the barrels. I will be looking at factory loads.

Thanks

If you mean factory ammo, I'd go with the inexpensive( if there is such a thing ::)) stuff first, Federal Power-Shok and Remington, they're about as inexpensive as you can get, Federals shoot good in mine and at $16 a box, the price can't be beat, check Walmart for ammo first. ;)

Thanks Tim, I will let y'all know how it works out......That or what color sling I will be wearing  ;D  I hear they (300 win mag) will kick the bejesus out of ya.....I guess I better look into some after market recoil pads such as simms or something along those lines.

The OE comes with a good recoil pad comparable to the Limbsaver, that and the stock design make it a very comfortable rifle to shoot.  ;) Just be sure to sit upright at the bench, get the rifle up high enough in bags so you don't hunch over and lean into it, makes recoil feel even worse, your upper body can't move back with it.
