.30-30 Information
« on: November 28, 2007, 03:26:13 AM »
I am not new to this forum.  I was active about 2 yrs ago when I got my .44  I had to re-register about a week ago, probably since I hadn't posted in a while.  My .44 has been a disappointment with factory ammo but I see that I probably got one of the over bores.  Now I think I will get a replacement barrel in .30-30 when season is over.  I want a round with a rim to reload for and my question is:

  1. Will the .30-30 print within 2 - 3 inches at 100 yards with a scope?
  2. Does the o ring trick help and what O ring do you use?
  3. Will the .30-30 be a good choice.  Ranges would be out to 100yards, 150 tops.

Will post next on suggestions for the .44

Welcome back to the site. The 30-30 is a good choice for the ranges you describe. Yes you should be able to get it to shoot much better than 2 or 3 inches at a 100 yards. The O Ring trick is described in the FQA at the top of the page. I would not try any mods to it until I find out how it shoots. Dale

I have a 30-30 Handi. I put a 4x Weaver scope on it and it will shoot right around 1" at 100 yds.
I use Remington factory ammo. (150 gr. Core Lokt)
I think the 30-30 is one of the must haves in a Handi.

Yes the O ring does work. I put a small strip of leather down with wood glue on either side of the bolt hole on mine which also works, or doesn't hurt. Sanding the forend so the barrel doesn't touch also helps. I like it when I can slide a business card all the way down either side of the barrel smoothly. With hand loads mine will shoot a 1 inch group at 100 yards ... 170 grain Remington or Hornady bullets and 29.2 grains IMR 3031. Powders change, the max load for IMR 3031 used to be 30 grains but now the max is 29.2. Mine shoots almost as well with Federal 170 grain Power Shok ammo. Many report 150 grain factory ammo also shooting equal groups. The reports on the new Hornady 160 grain pointed bullet ammo is that it does not shoot as well in the Handi ... I also found that to be the case. Bullet performance at 100-150 yards is excellent on deer, I've shot a lot of them over the years with a 30-30. Where people get in trouble is when they over shoot the rifles ability or just bad bullet placement.

Welcome back jp!  ;) You can't got wrong with the 30-30, it's one of the must have Handi chamberings, never read complaint about it, ever! Mine shootings the Rem 150gr Core-Lokt extremely well, much better that the one handload I've shot in it. I've swapped stocks on mine to make it somewhat unique.

Actually you didn't "have to re-register" you "chose to do so". You could have just contacted me and asked for assistance in getting back on line. So long as you knew your old user name I likely could have gotten you back on line fairly quickly. Most likely you just forgot your password and it didn't allow you to log in so you registered a new user name. That's OK but it was not forced on you. We help folks in that situation all the time get back on using their old names.

I still can do that really.

You'll like the 30/30.  Mine has a Bushnell 2X7 Legend on it.  Here's a group using 150 gr Winchester Power Points at 100 yards.

I guess it doesn't matter.  It let me use my same user name.  The only difference is the post count and join date is newer.

My little boy shoots ragged holes with his using the Lee 7.62x39 cast boolit under 7gr. of Unique.  The darn thing sounds like a mouse fart when it goes off.  You'll like.......no, you'll love the 30/30 Handi.  Later.

Its nef"s most accurate out of the box gun they make! Its the only caliber i have not parted with in nef center fires! Get the barrel with iron sights so you can someday try a Williams peep on it! (Oh yes I still have 5 nef's yet 3 rim fires 1 shotgun and da turdy- turdy )(30-30)! Shoots the( deadliest mushroom in the woods )Green box 150s very well!

I'll add my affirmations about the Handi .30-30.  Mine routinely prints 3 shot groups +/- 1" @ 100 yards with Remington 150 gr. factory loads.  Personally, I love the way that load just WORKS on deer!  It will harvest cleanly, penetrate adequately (I have yet to recover a bullet!) and preserve venison from unnecessary bloodshot damage.  There are a whole bunch of rifle/cartridge combinations that would work just fine within the distance parameters you note (150 yards).  In my view, the Handi-.30-30 will do as well as any...and it's among the cheapest to purchase and feed.
