H&R .270 lam stock
« on: November 28, 2007, 09:37:56 AM »
Hi All: Justs called local pawn shop looking for a NEF turkey shotgun. He didn't have any in stock but
does have a H&R .270 with laminated stock and wants about $275.00 for it. Its used but has the
scope rail and all. Said the stock is beautiful. Sooooooo tempted. Is that a good price for the H&R?
I have a Steven .270 that makes one ragged hole at 100yds (when I do my part), but is bulky compaired
to the single shots (which I love - left handed and all <G>).

H&R doesn't offer the 270 in the Ultra any more, so it could be an old version, or someone has swapped stocks, or a special edition if it has a resin lam stock or it could also be a laminated pallet wood stock which is just a regular Handi. If it's a resin laminated stock as comes on the Ultras, that price is comparable to a new one, if it's just a Handi, it's over priced, new ones sell for about $220-$230. If it has a serial number prefix of NN or HN or later(the second letter denotes year of mfr as shown in the FAQs), I'd consider it if it's the resin lam stock, but if it's an NM or HM or earlier, don't, it can't be fitted with any high pressure barrels, even another 270 barrel, it has a weaker frame than late model H&Rs.

Thanks Tim - I was going to go look at it but that does seems a little high priced.
I have a .223 handi with synth stocks and was thinking of just ordering the .270
or .30-30 bbl for it. Would the .223 action be strong enough for the .270?

Yes,  depending on the year of mfr of the .223 frame, same thing applies on the 270, but they'll fit a 30-30 barrel to any frame made since 1987, 270 requires a 1999 or later frame. ;)

Tim: Serial nr. on the .223 begins NU273XXX....is that one of the newer ones? Really like the
.270 - but also fond of the .30-30. Statistics say that there are more deer killed with the good ol
.30-30 than ony other cal. Its all those good ol boy farmers an such that just take their rifle off
the rack, test fire it and go get their deer or elk. I had an old Winchester mod. 94 .30-30 that I gave to my
son cuz he could shoot it alot better than I could (old eyes - open sights). Really liked shooting
it though.

The 30-30 is one of the must have Handi chambering, standard answer is get em both!!! I have a 30-30 Handi, just bought another barrel for reaming to Improved, and I have two 270 Ultracomps. ;)

See the 30-30 Information thread down the page. ;)
