I am new here and just ordered a synthetic handi in .22 hornet for fox hunting at night. I had heard a lot of good things about the handis in this chambering and I have read this post and back through a few pages. I was wondering on if there was a serch function on this forum? I am picking the gun up on monday around 2:30 and will post some pics from the range(have one in my back yard) I am not planning on reloading and if I do I am going to get ther barrel rechambered in .22 k hornet anyhow then. but it seems that the whinchester stuff is the best to get?

Welcome to GBO! The only search function is the Google search on every page, the software search will be turned on after the new servers are installed.
Can't help with the ammo, I've only handloaded for mine.

Welcome aboard , as Tim said the only search is the google ( bummer ) but it does help and is better than nothing .

I too have a Hornet barrel coming but it will never see a Hornet round , the day it arrives its off to Gary Reeder for a re-chamber to 224GNR .

From what i have seen the Winchester White Box and the Remington Green Box both shoot well in the little Hornet , so have fun with it .

FWIW I had my syn 22 Hornet rechambered to a K-hornet with not much noticeable difference in velocity or accuracy.... Mine has never been real fussy Like either one of my 77/22 Hornets were.... A buddy of mine liked what i have and bought one but I am not sure what ammo he setteled on. If I get ahold of him will let ya know

mine liked the winchester 46 gr hp and the hornady 35 gr v-max before i started handloading for it.

I am still going to keep the brass. my father as a reloading press and all we would need to net is the dies powder bullets and primers and I would be set. hopefully if comes in today. that is what the gun shop said it would be in on monday. I am going to call around 1 and see. but hope to shoot it in at 50 yds then moving out to 100 then.

The hornet should be a fab fox round, the closest I have shot is jackrabbits and it worked really well.

You will want to reload, the hornet is one of those rounds where it is worth it Locally for me (Canada) a box of 50 is about 46$ I can reload them for 13$ with high end heads.

I did the k-hornet conversion mainly to shoot 50 gr heads at a reasonable velocity when I made the decision there was 400 fps difference between a regular and k-hornet with those bullets. Lil gun powder has dropped that to 100 fps, so it is probably no longer worth it.

Bigben, i encourage you to reload for it, loading is something that people dont do verry much anymore and the more we get people to do it the better off we will be in the future in my opinion. Oh, yea, range report is manditory!

allright picked the gun up today and I am a bit peeved. I bought two boxes of ammo the cheap checz ammo that was 22.00 a box and the expensive whinchester 46 gr HP that I was reccomended to be the best shooting rounds out there. guess which one shot better? the dang cheaper ones. what the hell am I gonna do with a 45.00 box of ammo with 3 shells empty? the cheap ones were shooting .5 in at 75 and about 1 in at 100 the others where lucky to get 3" out of. the only thing I can think of is use the whinny HP's for polishing and breaking in the gun barrel some more. or save for g-hogs and shoot em at them smelly critters. so far I am happy with the gun. shot about 25 shells through it cleaning every 5 shots. the gun could use some trigger work and I think I am going to put on a stony point rapid bipod system for it then but the trigger is going to wait until after fur season. the trigger is just heavy and does not have any noticable creep. the blueing looks nice and the synthetic stock sits nice in the hand. I do have a pretty cheap scope on it. a tasco world class with ill ret. but it is clear and holds zero.

Oh buddy I feel your pain, last year at this time while I was making the decision do the k conversion I bought some factory to play ... I mean test. I was holding off buying dies until I figured out which way I was going to go, before the dust settled I had spent the better part of 200$ on factory ammo. Not counting rimfire I don't think I have spent 200$ on centerfire for the better part of 20 years combined. The kicker is the last two boxes were pulled because I did not use them up before the conversion.

Which cheap checz ammo shot that well, the P- (can't remember the name but it starts with P) what ever stuff or the S & B? BTW- Most that Checz ammo is in a box of 20 rather than 50 like the Winchester. If you paid 22 bucks for 20.........that ain't so good. It commonly can be found for 7-8 bucks a box. I tried the S & B ammo in my Handi Hornet and unfortunately, all though low priced it shot like crap.
Last as a reference you will note the velocity of the CZ ammo is much slower than than about everything else made under the sun.

Usually the factory Winchester 46 gr HP shoots pretty well in Handis and and most other Hornets for that matter. It's the safest bet when spending money on un-known factory ammo for most Hornets made. Best place to start..........normally.

Put the spendy ammo on a shelf and leave it. Ammo does not melt or mold or anything. Just stick a note in the box as to why you don't want to shoot it.

The Hornet is pretty simple to get started with - if reloading then use light quality bullets like the 35 GR VMAX Hornady bullet and a big dose of H110 or Lil Gun based on the Hogdon web site load. If you are buying factory ammo - buy the Hornady Vmax ammo - fast and accurate. If scoped - zero your scope at 25 yards to shoot 1/2 inch low - that will put you at about a 125 yard Zero with 35 gr. Hornady VAMX or your own reloads at 3000 plus fps. You will be about 1/4 in high at 50 yards and a 1/2 inch high a 100 yards. Pretty flat for the typical range of the Hornet. If using iron sights zero to hit 1 inch high at 25 yards and you will still be flat out to 100 yards.

I just picked up a Hornet last week. I ordered 200 empty brass, 100 35gr V-Max
& 100 40gr Sierra Hornet Varminter bullets, and a set of Lee Deluxe dies from Midway.
They won't be here till next week. The salesman at the gunshop asked me if I wanted
to buy any factory ammo for the Hornet. I thought about it and asked him what he had.
All he had were some Federal Premium in a box of 50. They wanted $50 for the box!!!!

I told him no thanks! I can wait till my reloading stuff comes in. I don't understand how
a lot of people can even afford to shoot by just buying factory ammo. For the 22 Hornet
I'm sure a person could easily get away with reloading for it using a Lee hand press. They
are only around $30. Throw in a set of dies for around $15-$20 and you are ready to rock
& roll! The good thing about the Hornet is it doesn't require much powder for a round that
approaches 3000fps. This cartridge is a real bargain! It just doesn't make sense not to
reload anymore IMHO.

I never tried that brand. That was the name I was trying to think of though.

I am sure some here can use that information and may try their value ammo in their Handi Hornet.

I seen it on the net for 7-8 bucks per box of 20 this past summer. About the same price as value .223 ammo.

If nothing else they can reload / neck size the once fired brass........

I o ring floated the barrel yesterday and went to the range and tried it out. it brought the groups of the whinchester stuff down I did not have the cheaper ammo. but in reality it should bring them in also. trigger pull on this gun is 66 oz's which is 4.125 lbs. not bad but I am still not sure if I want to get it lightened. I practiced like I would be hunting yesterday and if there is a fox within 100 yds he is dead.
