Curses! Bitten by the automatic safety bug

The trend in O/U field guns appears definitely to be to use automatic tang safeties. Browning still uses pure manual safeties. Ruger has manual safeties as optional. Most others use automatic. Ugh.

My Beretta 12 gauge field gun has an automatic safety and since it's a field gun I don't think it'll be a problem. But if you were to use such a gun for skeet you'd probably not want the automatic safety.

Fortunately in the case of the Berettas it's a minor operation. Unfortunately gunsmiths will not do it for you because to do so creates a liability problem for them. This is a booger because you can get the same action in a different configration, say sporting clays version, that has a manual safety while the field model has the automatic safety.

My stoeger o/u has the automatic safety also. It messed me up a couple of times at first but I got used to it.

Krieghoffs have a manual safety, but also have a set screw that gives you the option of locking the safety so you can't move it accidentally

Perhaps but I've seen a LOT of K32s and K80s and owned some myself. Never yet seen one with an auto safety. Not to say none exisits but it's sure not the rule for them to have one.

I've owned a few guns in my life time with an auto safety, a couple of Ruger Red Labels and some SxS guns but none have ever stayed at my house for long. I just can't abide an auto safety. I'll do the thinking for myself thank you.

I grew up with auto safeties on side by sides.  All I can tell you is to shoot more trap sporting clays or skeet.  But call for the bird with the gun low every so often.  I will help you in the field.

I said Kreighoffs have a Manual safety.  My only point was that they have a way of preventing accidental engagement of the manual safety

I've had and used auto safeties on many shotguns over the years, and I don't like them. Most of the arguments in favor of auto safeties claim they make the guns safer. I've always felt that the day I need an auto safety to make me safe in the field is the day I quit hunting. No mechanical device makes you safe, that's your job.
