Pirates 2 episode on MythBusters 11/28/07
« on: November 29, 2007, 09:39:31 AM »
Did anyone catch the show? Interesting what they shot out of the 6 pound cannon. The chain really wrecked havoc on the pig carcass, even better than the grape-shot. Also tested was cutlery, large nails, a bottle of wine and as a joke a wooden leg (instant slivers).
The episode repeats on Sat. 12-1 at noon and on Thursday 12-6 at 10 pm and Friday 12-7 at 2am.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Yea I watched it last night. Sure was graphic when the grape and chain hit the porker.

Yes, very entertaining as always.  Since it was "Pirate" themed though they should have used something on a naval carriage instead of a field carriage.  That shot with the chain was most impressive.

Not sure what the diameter of their "grapeshot" was, but it looked a little small for grape and a little large for canister. I demand a ball count! Devastating on the pig nonetheless.

The spoons and forks didn't do much, not enough mass to create any momentum. There's always the chance of a lucky hit on a vital spot, but the pig showed no signs of serious injury.

The steak knives surprised me. Flechettes indeed! Their greater weight due to the wooden handle no doubt contributed to their extra effectiveness.

The nails were sort of unspectacular, but they did leave some incapacitating wounds on Porky.

The sections of chain were devastating! They nearly ripped the pig carcass in half. Although I felt the chain was a little out of place because, like the control load, the use of chain is no myth. Also, it's my understanding that chain was not really used as an antipersonnel load, but rather as a means of disabling a ship by tearing apart its rigging.

All in all, it was fun to watch. "Old Moses" is a fine gun, and the star of the segment. Yes, a naval gun would have been more appropriate, but given the circumstances a gun on a field carriage is a lot more user-friendly.

The Mythbusters need a gun of their own.

Chain was used against rigging, but it had a cannon ball on each end of it.  You get some kind of idea of what that would do if it hit a crewman who happened to be in the rigging or if it went low along the deck.

Thanks for the link, I somehow managed to navigate my way to that episode, download their viewer, and watch it.  It sure wasn't intuitively obvious how to get to the episode on that site, but about 10 minutes of pushing every button on the screen got to it by process of elimination.

Anybody remember the "Tree Cannon" episode a few years back where I taught The Mythbusters how to fire a cannon?  We took a bronze 18th C. French swivel gun out in the front yard and fired a few rounds.  Those boys do learn quickly, I didn't have to tell 'em anything twice.  That episode ran again last week and quite a few folks came up to me at the gun show and said they had recognized me.  Well, that's what the "15 minutes of fame" is all about I guess!

We did do some fooling around with chain shot and bolt-canister vs. pallets, about a year ago, and put it on you-tube.  We used an antique, steel rifled cannon that we use for experiments because it is very tough.  We've shot a 12-lb. projectile from it using 8 oz. of powder or more and it doesn't seem to bother it a bit.  As some of you may have seen, we prefer PVC pipe sections, backed by 3/4 in. thick plywood sabot, for launching any  non-round items.  We slot the PVC part way along the side every 90 degrees to make sure it discards just out of the muzzle.

I would like to see the cutlery fired again. I read somewhere that cutlery was used when shot was in short supply but I also recall it being wrapped in leather before being stuffed home. I wonder how big a difference that would have made. Anyone care to try?

My other issue with the show was the peg leg. I know it wasn't that heavy but there was a huge gap between the charge and projo. I was sure that could have gone ugly. Lucky, I guess.
