Ruger MarkII Ammo ?
« on: April 12, 2007, 09:32:45 PM »
I have a Ruger MarkII Target that I am in the process of setting up for target shooting.  I know the deal with every gun liking different ammo, but what are you guys using in yours, looking for a place to start, without buying tons of ammo before I find what shoots best.  Thanks for your help.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Mine likes low-velocity ammo best...and I get the best accuracy shooting Wolf ammo.

Every Mark II I have seems to like CCI Subsonic hollow points.  Some lots are liked better by different pistols (I have 4).  The Lapua and Eley subsonics seem to work well also but don't shoot enough better than the CCI subsonics to justify the cost.  How well do they shoot?  I have numerous groups (all ten shots) around 3/4s of an inch at 50yds using the CCI.  These are scoped and off a very steady rest with the VQ sear installed so the trigger pull is right at 2lbs.  Last time at the range my wife shot a group with the Eley that was right at 3/8s inch but that is exceptional rather than the rule.

I agree

It also shoots great in my 2 and in my dad's 2. It is accurate enough that I use it in bullseye and functions perfectly in all of them.

Mine likes CCI mini mags (not the hollow points).

CCI Mini Mags work well in my target model and the slab side competition target. Accurate enough for falling plates and have yet to have a misfire.

Another vote for the CCI Mini Mag (not hollow point) in the slab side competition target. Tried Remington sub sonic HP's, which are great in my 10" TC .22 Match, but they were crap in the Ruger.

WOLF match works for me, as does Winchester. What does not work is Remington.

I have a Ruger 22/45 mk III Target w Leupold 2X. Nothing works good in mine. About 1 1/4 inch at 25 yards is as good as I can do. All the slower stuff does better. I haven't found the magic bullet, or I can't shoot , or this pistol can't shoot. What are some of you getting?

Remington Sub-Sonics or CCI Standard Velocity.  Like many of the others, the expensive stuff will shoot alright but not good enough or better than the inexpensive ammo to justify the cost.

Gary G:  if your 22/45 is supposed to be a target model it should shoot into one hole at 25m.  The slower stuff will do better because it is probably more accurate.  The biggest problem I ahd with my Ruger Gov't Target was the horrendously crummy Ruger trigger and as soon as I replaced that with a Clarke Trigger it became a one-hole shooter.  Mikey.

Mostly I shoot the cheap, bulk, Federal stuff from Wally World in my Slabside competition Mark II.  The stuff cycles flawlessly and I've had almost no misfires.  Accurate too.  Had good luck with CCI Mini Mags too.

Gary,
My worst shooting MKII will put ammo it likes in one round hole at 25yds.  I use this adapter clamped onto the front of the barrel up snug against the front site, to keep it from moving.  It will move under recoil if you don't.  It makes holding the gun steady easier.

Scroll down and click on the HB4 adapter.

You can pick them up at Midsouth or Natchez for around $20.

You may need to try different ammo.  Give S&K Standard Plus a shot.  I buy my local when it is available and from Champion Shooters Supply when it isn't.  The CCI Subsonics seem to shoot well out of the barrels too.

Gary G,
Had to take my dot sight off my Slabside Target to put in a new battery. I put it back on, and shot three shots to verify return to zero. I shot three rounds at 25yds using Federal Bulk ammo, and rested over my shooting bag. The group measured .304" center to center. I haven't grouped it in a long time, just sighted it in with CCI mini mags. Don't remember how it grouped with them, but good enough for falling plates I guess. Sorry for the quality of the picture, all I had was my camera phone.
