Killer weeps as Father Riley testifies
A Sydney man who has admitted fatally bashing an elderly war veteran with a hammer wept as youth worker Father Chris Riley gave evidence at his sentencing hearing.
In the NSW Supreme Court on Friday, Father Riley - founder of the Youth Off The Streets charity - said he had known Beau Steven Mitchell, 22, for about six years.
"Without alcohol he is as normal as you can get," Father Riley said, adding that he would still support Mitchell, although the young man had been given many chances over the years.
He told Justice Roderick Howie that Mitchell was "shattered" by his violent crime.
Mitchell has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Lindsay Martin, 73, who died after suffering extensive head injuries in the early hours of November 16, 2005.
He also has admitted causing malicious damage by fire by setting alight the home unit of the retired returned serviceman.
The hearing is continuing.
