Welcome aboard bart!! The Hornady factory ammo is good for 2050fps MV according to John Taffin's test of the .500 Handi, the trajectory listed below is calculated, but gives you an idea of what ~3" high at 100yd or 150yd zero will give you.

Welcome bart ... I am a relocated former Hoosier now living out west. A very good friend of mine owns a gun shop in southern Indiana and has told me the new pistol-caliber hunting laws have been very good for business. I kind of hate missing out on that but that's part of life. Good luck with your .500 Handi.

Good luck with the 500SW. Going by the chart then the 500 has a MPBR of just under 175 yards. With that being said you can hold dead on out to 175 yards and still be in the kill zone of a Deer. Out past that you would have to hold over. The max you should be shooting a Deer with this round is about 220 yards besause the energy drops below 1,000 lbs past that. Dale

4" high at 100yds helps a bit, but the short fat 350gr bullet with a poor BC of .145 just doesn't carry well at range. I don't know what the BC of the Hornady Leverevolution ammo is, they don't list it, but if I was shooting factory ammo in my 500 Handi, it would be right at the top of my list to try, Taffin chrono'd it at 2248fps MV.

Boy you have to admit this round drops like a rock. Hard hitter at closer ranges though. Dale

thanks for for all the info.  but i'm a little slow when it comes to all the numbers you guys left. (sorry)  i just want to hunt with this gun and know i will make a good shot and not just wound a deer.  if i am understanding you guys right i should keep it to about 100 yards.  i seen a deer this morning but was a little nervos to take the shot. my range finder had it at 129 yards.   i passed on it, but wonder all day if i made a mistake in not shooting. i have to say it is really cool to have a site for all of us handi-guys out there! such a great idea!  thanks            BART

There's no shame in passing on a shot that you're not sure of, building confidence to know your rifle better can only be achieved by shooting it and sighting in for the conditions you expect. Whether you're using a scope or iron sights also figures into the equation, a low power scope can make accurate shooting on game a much better choice over iron sights when shooting over 100yds. If you zero your 500 so it's 2½"-3" high at 100yds, you should be good out to 150yds easily, but shoot it at 150 or 200yds to see how much drop you have, then you'll know for sure how your rifle does with that ammo. Once you shoot it at those ranges, and having a range finder to confirm exact range before you take the shot, you can extend the range well past 100yds if you choose to, although it's not required, just get closer, traditional muzzleloader and handgun hunters as well as archers do it all the time. ;)

naptown bart, welcome to gbo, i have a 500, i have had good luck with it over the past two seasons, i have a bushnell 3 x 9 banner scope on it, it is set 2" high at 100 yds., i shoot hornady 350 gr. xtp factory loads most of the time, i have killed two deer with it this season both were 100 yds or less, last year i shot one at about 140 yds with this gun, i would shoot at a deer with this set-up, up to about 180-200 yds., last year i killed a nice eight point with a 30-06 handi-rifle at 285 yds., in this same feild, so these little rifles will shoot, good luck in your new indiana gun season,
