That's reasonable, the scope is a moot issue, rings may be worth more than the scope, but a new 308 will cost about the same with no scope.

I think it's a bit high for a used gun(what are the first 2 letters of the serial #?) but depending on condition and others things such as if it is an ejector or extractor barrel it might be OK. I personally don't care for BSA scopes at all. Others here will have something to add and they may be more price knowledgeable than I. Good Luck, how good a friend is he, perhaps he will sell you the gun without the less than desirable scope....<><....:)

My opinion, the scope's not worth throwing away. But, at least around here, that is about the going price for that gun.

Seriously, at today's price of ammo, the value of a firearm that's broke-in but in new condition, may actually hold more value than a new one if shooting factory ammo!! :D

I just did some checking with a large gun shop I go to that has an on-line used gun section, that price does not seem to be out of line after all, in fact it is something you should seriously consider. Perhaps your friend will consider selling you the gun with the scope rail and rings and he could keep the scope (for up to $200.00 perhaps?), of course he might think the scope is worth more and knock even more off without the scope. After doing some checking I say go for it if it is what you want....<><....:)

BSA's are ok for rimfires but they will not last long on a .308, if the rifle is in like new condition $225 is not a bad price.  Count the bases and rings as a bonus and buy a good scope.

mooman, welcome to gbo, here where i live, a local sporting good store sells new handi-rifles for, wood stocks or black synthetic stocks 229.00-239.00 each new in box, cinnamon laminated stocks with the gold coin in the stock 269.00 each, they have most calibers in stock, if not they will order you a gun it will be in a week or so if it is stock, another gun shop sells new and used guns, they are higher on new handis but they trade guns, most of time they have used handi-rifles priced around 150.00-175.00, i bought a like new 25/06 with box and papers from him one day for 165.00,  so there are deals out there on handis if you look around, good luck with your handi,

mooman ...

Welcome to GBO! You just experienced what I like most about GBO forums. You posted about a buying opportunity ... got very good responses from guys all over the place who gave their advice/opinions ... and made what sounds like a heck of a deal. MSP first stated he thought the price was on the high side and gave his opinion on BSA scopes. But, he didn't stop there because he did some research for you and came back with yet another reply with even more info for you. Tim made a great point about the costs of "breaking in" a new rifle and how it affects the value of a good used rifle. The other replies seemed to be very helpful too.

Good luck and let us know how that .308 shoots.
