.44 with Tightgroup?
« on: December 02, 2007, 12:38:54 PM »
Have a large bottle of this stuff and was wondering if any of you guys have any recipes for the .44 using cast bullets.  Would like something in the 1200fps range.  None of my manual list TG for the .44 at all.

Here's what I found on the Hodgdon reloading site for titegroup.  Not sure if you're using 240gr but they do list a max of 1288 with 240 grainers and 10 grains of TG.  I'd start lower and work up.  Here's the site hope it works.  http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

JerryKo is that from a handgun or a handi?  My present box says 240 but weight in on an average of 252 gr.  I will reduce a bit to start.  Thanks for the reply.

Hodgdon's site that JerryKo linked to shows 44mag rifle and pistol loads, rifle data is from a 20" barrel with 1:38" twist, they use Rem 2½ primers.

Is that attachment working?  It works here but not sure if it is correct for anyone else.  Let me know if not I'll delete or Tim can delete.

Thanks

It works if you click the filename and open or save it. ;)

Is that 10.0 gr a typo or is it really 38,400 psi when only reaching 1423 fps?

Look at it yourself, not a typo, it's copied and pasted direct from their data. ;)  That just goes to show you that Titegroup is a mighty poor choice in a rifle, it probably burns so quick that the bullet is still in the bore and slowing down before it exits, while other powders (H110/296) that produce the same pressure are building that pressure over a longer time. Titegroup is #19 on the powder burn rate chart,  110/296 are 111 and 112!! ;)

Wow.  I knew it was not a powder for performance but a range toy like Unique.  I've used Unique and Bullseye before in a .44 rifle.  Yep, it's a squib load but I'm glad you let me know about that pressure since I will back off that 10.0 grains some when using those 252 gr bullets.  I was only looking for about 1000 to 1200 anyway.  I will use H110 for normal velocity loads.

Edited to:  I will now start with 6.0 gr TG with the 240 to 252 gr bullets.  Should get close to 1200 with a 22" barrel.
