I would love to shoot either a 460 or a 500 some day...For now though, I am happy shooting my Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44Mag...That gun barks just fine for me...I love the flames that shoot out of the front of the cylinder when firing that bad boy...I've got my red dot dialed in tight at 50 yards...I'm all set for this season.

I'd agree with several earlier posters that it is the gun more than the cartridge that makes a world of difference.  Add to that, the grip you choose.  About 20 years ago I had a 629 S&W .44 that I put Pachmeyer Gripper grips on.  The grips were fairly hard rubber, and fairly narrow on the backstrap.  The grips coupled with the DA grip shape made this gun painful to shoot.  Every shot drove the narrow backstrap into the web of my hand between thumb and forefinger.  I was only a few years out from having hand surgery, so undoubtedly that made me more sensitive.  Regardless, I finally ended up trading the gun away, assuming that must be my limit for recoil.  I shot a Desert Eagle .44 for a while and found that easy, but like holding a brick.  Then I bought a Ruger SBH .44 with a 5.5" barrel.  I find that to be a downright pussycat to shoot.  Even shooting hot handloads and Corbon thumpers give me no trouble at all.  It's all in the grip style.

A few years ago I bought a Ruger SRH .480.  Considering my past 629 experience with the DA grip style, I bought a Hogue rubber monogrip.  It is much more hand filling than the gripper grips I had on the Smith.  While it was nothing like the unhappiness I suffered with the Smith, it was still less than pleasant, akin to slapping your hand on a table at every shot.  It wasn't like the recoil was actually slamming the gun hard enough to really hurt, more of a stinging yank.  I got used to it, have learned to shoot it pretty well, have taken 2 deer with it, but still considered it my new recoil limit.  My best group to date is a 3.5" 6 shot group at 100 yds off a rest.  After a bit of shooting over the years, I surmised that maybe the rubber grip was the problem.  The SBH .44 has the SA style with polished Lett grips on it that allows the gun to slip slightly in the hand at the initial snap.  My theory was that maybe the rubber was sticking to the skin of my hand so that it was yanking the meat of my hand around at each shot, hence the sting to the fleshy part of the hand.  I decided to purchase a new polished wooden grip from Hogue.  Kind of an expensive experiment at a bit over $100, but I had some birthday money to kill.  I bought what they call their "Big Butt" grip.  It has finger grooves and an extended butt piece to allow the shooter to rest it on a pad if you like.  I installed it this week and took it to the range.  Outstanding!!  The sting is gone.  The gun still recoils with gusto, but no sting to the hand.  All in all, very manageable and user friendly.  I shot 40-50 rounds of hot handloads (325 gr Gold Dots over Lil'Gun @ 1450-1475 fps, and 275 gr Gold Dots over H110 @ 1550-1600 fps).  At the very end, the side of my shooting hand thumb was starting to complain slightly.  After some scope tweaks, my best group with the 325 gr at the 25 yd range limit was one ragged hole, 0.395" C-2-C.  The next step is to get out to the woods and try it at a longer distance.  I set it up about 1/2" high at 25 yds, so it should be reasonably close at 100yds.

So, I guess I am back to not knowing my recoil limit once again.  Must be time to go shopping for a new toy.  Maybe it's finally time for a .454 or .475 FA! (if I could only afford one)?  Or one of those nifty .460 S&W?  Or maybe time for a Contender for those long shots?  Decisions...  Decisions...

In my case it is a heavily loaded 44 magnum,
Mine too.  I have 2 .44 SRHs, a 9.5" and a 2.5" Alaskan.  That little one starts to hurt with medium loads, but I CAN load the long barreled one up to "uncomfortable" without needing a larger caliber.

Rifles...my .44 and .243 are pussycats, the 7mm rem mag bolt gun I had kicked alot, I now have a BAR Boss that isn't so bad.

Shotguns are a different story.  When I'm shooting a pattern recoil doesn't seem to bother me much.  I can flinch and still hit pretty good with my 835 with 3.5" magnums, although the shoulder does start to hurt ;D

Hi Dkiller,  What do you have for grips on your SRH?  If they are stock, or Hogue rubber, you might try polished wood instead.  Per my post above, I found a lot of hand sting with the rubber Hogues on my SRH 480.  I went to polished wood Hogue finger grips and it made all the difference in the world.  I would think that Alaskan version has to be wicked snappy on the recoil.  With the rubber grip, that is really yanking the skin and meat of your hand around pretty viciously.

My TC in 45-70 don't get shot much anymore. Have been using the 30-30 barrel lately. The super 16 with pro point is not to bad.

I notice the glove in your picture.  Too much recoil without it?  Have you considered the dangers of arthritis in the future?  I bet it won't be so much fun then!

re,Woodchukhntr  Not too much recoil but a high amount of reloads that i had loaded up to try out.different kind of recoil like a push. Dangers of arthritis! You never know you could die before you ever got arthritis. I shoot full Bore and enjoy my 460xvr...

I have yet to meet my match also.  I have shot the Smith 500 also and it was not that bad.  I agree with my new 460 buddy (roger460xvr) how the recoil of the 460 is different from other big bore handguns I have shot.  It is hard to explain the burst of energy you feel on your face when you pull the trigger.  I mostly use it only for hunting so it doesn't get shot much.  If I come across another one used I might pick it up and shoot more with that.  Arthritis is not on my worry list right now.

I have 375 jdj and 444 that don't bother me. The worst for hurt was a orginal  44mag contender with 10" oct barrel and factory wood grips. It really stung. The only one I dropped was a 20" 12 ga on a encore pistol frame. Standard loads were comfortable but 2 ounce turkey loads were unbelivable. Not so much the hurt but the twist.. I later put a thumb hole plastic stock on it and it did the same thing.

Gee, that much trouble from a single barrel 20 ga shotgun?

I thought the Mafia hit guys used a double barrel 12 ga with 3" buckshot loads, with cut off short barrels and a pistol grip.  Remember the O-U 12 ga pistol the guy used to shoot Tony Montana in Scarface.  Most of the time they even shoot both barrels at the same time!

Oh wait, that's right, that was in the movies.  Guess those blank loads don't recoil as much as the real thing!

Sure would love to watch some gang banger see it on TV and try it for real.  Maybe he will try to shoot it one handed Dirty Harry style too!  Even better, from inside his caddy.  Then, when his ear drums are ruptured, all the windows are blow out, and the shotgun has broken off his thumb as it recoiled to impact his forehead, leaving the pistol grip sticking out the back of his head and the barrels sticking out the front...
