Model 1895XLR 45-70 range report
« on: November 13, 2007, 03:37:21 PM »
I took my Marlin to the range today to crony the very accurate load of a 405 gas check Cast Performance bullet over 55 grains of Varget.  The average velocity of the load was 1,821fps and the bullet drop (average) from 100 yards to 200 yards was 16.75".

Well, my first 2 shots were barrel fouling shots at 100  yards and each shot 2" low. But then I shot 3 consecutive rounds that cloverleafed at 100 yards! This is with a peep sight on the Marlin.

These guns are more accurate than I am.

I've been wanting to try Varget in my 1895GS.  It sounds like it works nicely.

I finally got around to taking a pic of the target. This target gets "stuck" in the garage somewhere!  ;D

My 45-70 Guide gun has always shot well. Just under 1" at a 100 yards with Moly coated Remington 405's. Use it every month at silhouette shoots. Gun sure is more accurate than me.

I was really amazed when I first got my 1895 45/70 at how accurate it was.  I had always heard that lever guns were not as accurate as bolt guns but I can actually shoot better with the 1895 than with several of my bolt action guns.
