Difference in consistency- Triple 7 vs. Pyrodex pellets

Learned something new while sighting in my Sidekick for the upcoming ML season. Used Pyrodex pellets (2) with 295 gr. Powerbelts the past two years, great accuracy out of my gun. This season tried to sight in with Triple 7 pellets (2) same bullet, same everything else. Good at 25 yds, but terrible at 50 and 100 yds.  Could not get it to be consistent at all. I will go back to Pyrodex.  Any thoughts as to why I got this result? I didn't think it would make that much difference....even didn't  sound as loud if that makes sense!

The NEF breech plugs are designed for loose powder. They will however shoot Pyrodex pellets well due to the Real Black Powder that is bonded to the base of the pellets. Real Black Powder has a low ignition temp (low 300's), 777 pellets don't have the black powder bonded to them and have a higher ignition temp. That is why 777 pellets are a 209 primer ignition powder, but the NEF plug has a long flame channel and does not get as much heat to the pellets.

777 pellets are not reliable in my NEF, and I have two standard plugs as well as a .25 ACP plug.

thanks for your explanation Busta.
I knew that they were different but didn't think it would account for that much of a difference. I will zero the scope using Pyrodex today with a different result I am sure. This set up was giving me 1-1.5 in. groups at 75 yds last year so I am sure I can do that again.

Have you ever considered 777 FFG or FFFG loose powder? You can really dial in a load with loose, about 85 grains of loose 777 is equivelant to two pellets. No problem with igniting loose 777 powder either.

  Good advice Busta:  Triple-7 loose is the way to go, I'm done with the pellets....

I will have to give that a try Busta. But for now I dialed it in pretty good today using 2 Pyrodex pellets. Dead on at 50 yds. and at 75 yds is two inches to the Right but perfect vertical center. Good enough for this upcoming deer season for the type of shots I will be taking. Thanks.
