Anyone use Lil Griz traps?
« on: December 08, 2007, 05:25:55 PM »
I just bought 7 Lil Grizz traps I was wondering if anyone had any tips on using them. They look like a pretty slick little trap. Thanks for any help

I have a couple dozen Grizz and I like them alot. It works well to put a piece of rubber hose or something similar on the trigger. This way when the coon reaches in he doesn't feel just metal. I've used the small rubber tube jigs made for crappie fishing. But you can use aquarium hose, surgical rubber or anything like that. Also make sure to push the trigger forward and get a little bait under/behind  it.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tip about the rubber hose. I'll try it. I put out 4 yesterday with a Marshmallow in behind the trigger and a couple I used a little sweet lure. I had one coon this morning.

Marshmallows are good and I usually use the small ones under the trigger and to fill the trap. Then I use one big one to cap the opening. Rain and wet can make them a gooey mess if a coon don't clean them out for you. lol! One thing about marshmallows they don't have much odor. I use a loud lure close to or even sometime on the trap. I like to put it on a branch above the trap if there is one close but that's not always the case. Don't be surprised if you find traps cleaned out by mice, squirrels and even ants. I've caught coon, possum, skunks and even the occasional feral cat using marshmallows.

I've got a couple of them. I've had good luck with a cotton ball soaked with fish oil placed behind the trigger. I haven't tried rubber coating the trigger as mac mentioned, but I think that is a great idea.
I use a lot of the coon cuffs, too. Just like the "push" triggers on them vs. pull triggers. I put the coon cuffs in end of a 4" PVC pipe section about 2' long and shove one end of it down in the creek bottom with trap end facing the bank/coon trail. I dye mine black to really stand out. Work well in a pocket set too with bait in back of pocket and trap blocking hole.
The little griz traps are nice and small, and I can wire one up just about anywhere such as under root systems on banks, to a smaller diameter pvc pipe section, to a rebar stake, etc. etc.
I use them a lot around barns and have had good success with them there. I've taken a lot of possums with this trap, too.
