optimum bullet weight for 308 with 1-11 twist?
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:01:49 AM »
I recently got a tikka t3 308  that has a 1-11 twist and am curious as to what would be the ideal bullet weight/type for that barrel
I know you have to shoot a bunch to see what it likes but would like a good starting point

Your question has many options.  Not only is twist and weight a factor, but the velocity that it is fired.  Have a few .308Win that like 175gr SMK's and a Savage that doesn't(it likes the 168gr SMK's).  Had an AR-10 with the 11.25" twist that liked the 155-165grainers.  But all was dependent on velocity and the pressure curve that the powder provided.  All my rifles like Varget powder, but projectile weights vary.

I have the same rifle as you. Whn it was new I tried various factory 165gr &150gr, the rifle preferred the 165gr. I load for it these days and it does very well with  165gr SGK and Varget at the standard 44gr charge.

followup
I loaded some rounds up
44, 45 and just a hair under max (45.7) (using Varget)
2.80 OAL

the first rounds were an inch group, 44g
2nd was about 3/4", 45g
3rd was cloverleafing at 45.7g

at 100 yards, next I need to get out to the outdoor range for 2 and 300 yard testing

I have a Sako in 308.  It loves Reloader 15 and 165 anything.  Never had great luck with Varget but YMMV.
